I drive up to school in my old, blue-gray pickup truck, parking in a spot of least resistance. I sit and watch as people head into the school for a moment before my phone buzzes. I pull it out of my bag and read the display on the lock screen. It is my best friend Kyle.
Kyle: What's up nerd? :P
I rolled my eyes, smiling as I replied to him.
Me: Waiting for you. Are you here yet or what?
I practically jumped as someone suddenly starting pounding on my door. My head whipped around to look, however my face hit the glass. "Oww." I wince as I grab my things and step out of my truck, holding the bridge of my nose in the process.
Kyle was doubled over, holding his stomach laughing. "I'm sorry Ella, but you should've seen your face!"
I glare at him. "I think my nose is bleeding." I observe, looking at some blood that has gotten on my hand.
Kyle looked up at me with a sudden serious expression. "I'm sorry, let me take you to the nurse." A worried tone filling his voice as he spoke. "Keep your head tilted back, it's suppose to help with the bleeding." He gently put one of his hands on my back and helped me to the nurse.
The nurse confirmed that my nose wasn't broken and kept me until second period with an ice pack on my face. Kyle stayed with me, even offering to walk me to class, but I declined. "Thank you anyway." I say as we head in opposition directions.
"I'll talk to you later." He watches me walk off, a glint of guilt in his eyes. Although he tried to hide it, I could see it written on his face. I nod, smiling softly as I head to class.
I was heading to History, my favorite of the six classes that I had. It was not my favorite subject... just my favorite classroom. I sat in the back of the class -where the teacher couldn't see me- by a large window that I would look out, getting absorbed in my thoughts.
I enter the classroom, scanning over the room of loud, obnoxious kids scattered around. Weaving through legs and desks, I make my way to my seat. As I get there, I notice a slight change of scenery. Tucked underneath one of the legs of the desk is a folded piece of paper with my name on it. After staring at the paper for a moment, I looked over my shoulder at the crowd of loud students, wondering who left it.
I place my things on the wooden desktop before bending down and pulling the paper out from under the leg of the desk. Turning it in my hands, I look it over curiously. 'Ella Somrett' it had written on it with random capitalization.
I set the note on my desk and sit down, letting my thoughts wash over me. I had never gotten a note before, especially not from a mysterious person.
I generously unfolded the paper, wondering what could be written on the inside. Chewing on my bottom lip, I pulled open the last fold. A single sentence was written on the inside, which read: "You have a secret admirer. Xoxo" This single sentence sent me through a range of emotions; curiosity, suspicion, confusion, happiness. The whole nine yards.
I placed the folded paper into the zippered inside of my bag, sandwiched in a small note book. For the rest of class, I could enjoy my window seat. All I could think about was the note. Who could it be? I text Kyle after second period to meet me in third early. He was already there, huffing from running the whole way from across the school.
"Hey" he breathed.
I smile and walk over quickly. "I have a secret admirer." I looked his face over excitedly, and his eyes seemed to sparkle.
"Do you know who yet?" He looked nervous but excited.
I tilt my head, pulling the note out slowly and looking it over carefully. "Wait, is this from you?.. Is this another prank?" I ask, feeling really disappointed.
Kyle shook his head quickly, but instead of correcting me, he leaned in and planted a tender kiss on my lips. "It's not a prank.. I really do like you Ella." He was about to say more when I cupped his cheeks and pulled his face into mine. I kissed him slowly, feeling his arms move to my waist. I was happy, I had found my admirer.
And he was right here all along.
