Chapter 1
Present Day
I try on another outfit for third time. Josie just moved to New Orleans after college. Her best friend Lucy thinks it's time she goes on a blind date. Looking at myself in the mirror I let out a frustrated sigh. This will have to do. I pull my unruly hair up in a messy bun. The humidity in New Orleans made my hair unbearable. I pick a pair of flats to compliment the skinny jeans and tank. I feel awkward. I haven't date anyone since high school. The memory gives way to an ache in her chest. It has dulled through the years but it is always there.
Lucy barges in and flops on her bed.
"So are you excited?." Lucy asks. Her long red hair hangs do perfectly, unaffected by the humidity.
"Well, I am nervous, I haven't done this for a long time."
"Well, when Derek sees you he is going to freak. You are like a pixie, with your beautiful blonde hair and blue eyes.
"The pixie term has nothing to do with my height?" I was the shortest of my friends five foot two. Lucy was five foot ten and all legs. Lucy was modelesque I was short. She was the type of woman that walked in the room and all eyes were on her.
"Ah, sugar you know I love you. I love that you're pocket sized. If I could carry you around in my pocket I would. Now, let's pick out something for you to wear."
"I was going to wear this. "She looks at me like I said the funniest thing ever. She runs off to her room and returns with what could be a long shirt.
"Now try this on. It is my go to dress." I struggled to wiggle in the tight fabric. It was a tiny black dress and strapless. How my tall friend could wear this was beyond me.
"It is so short, I never wear anything this tight and ah, short." It hit me mid thigh a hugged every curve, granted I was short and near curve less.
"You look hot! Now let's see what we can do about your hair and makeup." By the time Lucy was done I looked beautiful. I hardly wore make up and she framed my eyes and made them what she called smoky. She straightened my hair and sprayed it with something she said will help with the humidity. My lips were a bright red. Although she tried to get me to wear heels I put my foot down there. I stuck with my flats. I went into my room and grabbed the only piece of jewelry I owned. It was a charm bracelet I was given in high school. I carefully put it on and instantly felt the ache settle in my chest.
As uncomfortable as I felt all dolled up I knew this was something I needed to do. It was time to move on.
