twenty-nine // ashes to ashes we all fall down

Start from the beginning

Denahi looked at me, expecting me to say something. I could only find the strength to ask one. "Is Garrett in jail?"

He shook his head.

"The police shot him?" My voice crackled.

My older brother once again shook his head. "Chicago, he shot himself. He's dead."

My entire body began to shake with heartbreaking sobs and the throbbing in my shoulder intensified. That's when I finally decided to look at the television. It was turned onto the news and they were currently showing an aerial view of my high school. I could make out the yellow caution tape that surrounded the entire perimeter of the school.  They quickly cut to a reporter who looked familiar, but I couldn't remember her name.

She began listing people's names and I was surprised to hear her say mine first. A picture that was taken of me a few months ago at volleyball practice popped onto the screen.

"Chicago Ariana Beaumont, 16, was the last victim to be shot by Garrett Thomas, who happened to be her ex-boyfriend. "She was never intended to be a target," Aiden Leffew, a fellow classmate, explained. "Garrett loved her with every fiber of his being. He would have never hurt her on purpose."

Like a few other victims, Chicago was deemed a hero due to the fact that she tried to protect a classmate named Elodie Blanchard. "Garrett had the gun pointed at me," Elodie choked out. "Before he could pull the trigger, Chicago jumped in front of me and tried to reason with him to put the gun down. His eyes never left hers and I'm sure he would have stopped if somebody didn't grab him from behind. A teacher, I think, grabbed his shoulder, pulling him back and latching onto his hand that had the gun.

"That caused the gun to go off accidentally and shoot Chicago in the shoulder. She collapsed on the spot and I lunged forward to protect her body. She lost consciousness almost immediately."

Chicago Beaumont was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and still hasn't regained consciousness."

"Garrett didn't shoot you on purpose," Denahi said, softly. "He accidentally pulled the trigger. He may have hurt countless others, but he never meant to hurt you."

I choked back the tears as best as I could. "So Aiden didn't get hurt? The reporter mentioned that they interviewed Aiden. He didn't get hurt?"

My brother shook his head. "He was still outside in his car, looking for your history book when the shooting broke out."

I stayed silent as the reporter moved on to the next victim. A picture of Lilac appeared on the screen.
