Sam x Reader ~ two

That Saturday...

Sam had spent hours preparing for today; he wanted so badly for it to go perfectly. You realised that Cas had never been skating before either, so you invited him along, which seemed to bother Sam, but it was too late by that point. You couldn't just un-invite him, that would be mean. "Cas, have you got some ice-skates?" Sam asked. "Oh... One moment." Cas said before disappearing and then reappearing seconds later with a pair of skates in hand. "Where did you get those?" You laughed at Cas' perplexed expression as he analysed the skates. "I took them from someone in Time Square." He stated nonchalantly. "You stole them?" Sam scoffed. "Temporarily." He noticed Sam's smirk. "Sam you are one to be judging me on acts of illegality." Cas quipped. Sam was about to retort, but you interrupted him. "Hey, you two be nice. Today is gonna be great." You smiled reassuringly at Sam, who took a deep breath and carried on packing his bag. Dean had chosen not to come because he needed to do some "research" up at the local bar. Once the three of you were ready, you took your skates and bags to the impala, and drove down to the lake. It was only about twenty minutes away, so for the majority of the journey, you were trying to calm your nerves. Sam took your hand in his and rubbed circles on the back of it with his thumb kindly. He parked up and you, him and Cas got out of the car and walked to the edge of the lake. You sat down in the thin layer of snow and began to put your skates on and tie them up. Cas followed suit, and Sam was done before either of you. He helped you up once you had finished getting them on, and slowly led you out onto the ice. You timidly, stepped on after him and straight away lost your footing. You slipped but he caught your waist and held you until you regained your balance. He kept his arm around you waist and took your other hand in his and he began to dance with you across the ice. He supported you, and leant into him. Moments later, Cas joined you on the ice. He drifted past you, his arms swinging casually by his side and his face seemingly unaffected by the fact that he was rolling over the ice, unable to stop. He looked around, admiring the scenery, not moving his feet at all. It made you laugh how out of place he looked. Sam taught you how to start and stop, turn and balance, and some small tricks as well. For someone of his build, he was actually very graceful. You thought his height would make it difficult for him, but he held himself in a way that reminded you almost of royalty. He held your hand and the two of you glided across the ice. The feeling was foreign, but you enjoyed it nonetheless. You didn't want to stop. You caught Sam staring at you a couple of times, which made you lose focus. At one point, you tripped and landed on your butt. Sam instinctively came over to see if you were okay, but when he offered you his hand, you pulled him down so that he fell over too. Both of you sat there giggling like little children; it was so calming to be away from books and work and all the other stuff that you had to deal with. Cas watched the two of you from the other side of the lake. You didn't notice and neither did Sam, because you were too busy laughing and smiling at each other. Suddenly, Cas had a thought. He skated over to Sam's rucksack, and pulled out a camera. He pointed it at the two of you and snapped a picture. It printed and Cas stared down at it. Although it was in black and white, it was incredibly detailed. You could see the sparkle in your eyes as you grinned happily at Sam. And Sam's loving gaze as he admired your face. It captured all the love and purity that you and Sam shared. It was everything you and Sam were. Beautiful. Cas tucked the picture away in his trench coat and put the camera back in the bag.

Sam stood up and then helped you up. "Come on, Y/N." Sam skated away and you followed him. You approached a section of the ice that you had not yet skated on. You didn't realise that it was thinner than the rest of the ice, and nor did Sam. "Look, I can do a spin!" You squealed excitedly to Sam who laughed and told you to show him. Unaware of the thin ice beneath you, you skated out onto the area where you hadn't been before. Just before you got ready to do show him, you heard the ice creaking underneath you. It cracked and you plummeted into the freezing water. Your breath got knocked out of you because of the temperature drop. You panicked and thrashed about, repeatedly being engulfed by the small waves. You tried to scream for help, but instead gulped down the dirty water. The noise came out as a gargle as you tried to stay at the surface. You didn't know what you were doing, you couldn't think straight. Fear clouded your mind as you felt the water flood your lungs. You couldn't swim... You'd never learned. It was similar to ice-skating except, not knowing this could cost you your life. You tried to scramble back onto the ice, but you could feel the weeds underneath the water tangle and tug at your ankles. You vision started to go black as you struggled for air. You slipped again and went under. When you tried to get back to the surface, you were trapped by a layer of ice. You screamed and punched the thin sheet of ice above you. Then, a strong, muscular pair of arms grabbed you and lifted you above the surface. Sam pulled you away from the ice and held you close. "Y/N? Can you hear me? Are you alright?" He pushed your hair out of your eyes. You couldn't reply because you were coughing up water. When you'd finished spluttering, you shoved Sam away. You wiped your eyes, and the panic flooded out your system. In its place, anger rushed through your icy veins. You knew something bad like this would happen! You knew you couldn't swim or skate, so why had you let Sam talk you into doing this? You screeched and stormed over to the bank, making sure to stay clear of the thin ice and you kicked the skates off. Furiously, you threw them aside and grabbed your bag from the ground. You shivered as you turned to Cas and Sam, who stood watching you, and in your frustration you shouted at them. "Today was awful! I hated it! I hate skating! And I hate you!" You swiped your jacket up from the ground and sulked back to the motel, leaving the boys. They paused in shock for nearly ten minutes. Your words had stung Sam and tears threatened to spill over his cheeks, so he sniffed and shot Cas a nasty look. He hurried over to the bank and picked up his belongings and your skates. Cas did the same and they got back into the impala. You had run back to the motel and seen that the door was unlocked, so you knew Dean was back. You were frozen to the core because of the wet clothes that clung to your body. You rushed inside and saw Dean sitting at the table doing work on Sam's laptop. He glanced up at you and then back at the laptop, before doing a double take. "Y/N... What the hell happened?" He stared, slack-jawed. You were too upset and cold to reply, so you marched past him and straight into the bathroom. You locked the door behind you and collapsed onto the floor. You had come across your fair share of near-death experiences, but they were all monsters that got a bit too close, or misdirected bullets. You had never, ever experienced something so horrifying as nearly drowning. The images fresh in your mind and the salty taste fresh on your tongue, you pictured the darkness beneath you, the light you could almost reach until you were dragged under again. Being tossed around by the water made you feel so useless. Like each gulp of water was another step closer to the lake claiming you as its own. You had felt hopeless, until Sam reached down and saved you... Sam. Oh god... What you said- he must hate you now. Of course you hadn't meant any of it, you were just scared and angry. Pulling your knees up to your chest, you sobbed pitifully.

Minutes later, there was a light knock on the bathroom door. "Uh... Y/N? I don't know what happened at the lake, but I really gotta pee so..." Dean spoke, his voice muffled by the door. You wiped away your tears and hauled yourself off the floor. Slowly, you turned the lock and opened the door. Dean half-smiled and nodded thankfully at you as you stepped out of his way. He went in and closed the door behind him. Meandering back to the main area of the motel room, you saw someone sat on Sam's bed; it took you a minute to register that it was Cas. You quietly turned around and tried to sneak into the kitchen. "Y/N. You should know that I am aware of your presence. Please don't leave." Cas said without looking at you. You froze and cursed yourself for leaving the bathroom. Without any other choice, you entered the main area and sat next to Cas on the bed, leaving quite a gap because you knew he wouldn't want to be near you after what you had said. "Cas..." You began, but he stopped you. "There is no need to apologise Y/N. I know you are sorry." He nodded understandingly. "If you will forgive me, I must tell you that when you fell into the water and were... drowning, I read your thoughts." Cas explained. You wanted to be angry but you couldn't, he wouldn't have done it if he didn't think it necessary. He continued. "Why did you not tell Sam that you couldn't swim? I'm sure he would not have been so insistent on you going to the lake if you had just informed him of this." You sighed. "Cas, I couldn't tell him. I didn't want to disappoint him. If you had been there, that day, when I agreed to go ice-skating, you would have seen how happy it made him. I haven't seen him smile like that in so long. I couldn't disappoint him... I couldn't." Tears gathered in your eyes. Cas stared at you. "Y/N. I also know of your affections for Sam..." You looked up at Cas. "I believe I know what they mean. Dean has told me that when a person feels that way you feel about Sam, they are in love. I have learnt to recognise it." He said thoughtfully. "Oh, Cas. Please don't tell Sam. He can't find out! It would ruin everything." You panicked. "So, you agree? It is love." Cas asked. "Why... Yes. I love Sam, very much. But he doesn't love me. Not the same way. And that is why he can't ever find out." You emphasized how important it was that Sam didn't discover your feelings. "Oh... You have not realised that he feels that same about you..." Cas pulled a confused face. You stopped dead in your tracks. "What?" You gasped, breathless. What Cas was saying couldn't be true. "I didn't mean to intrude, but the scenario piqued my curiosity and so I went forth and looked into Sam's thoughts too." Cas didn't look you in the eye. "And..?" You hadn't meant to sound so desperate. Cas smiled. "You do not realise how much he loves you Y/N. Truly, you mean the world to him." You couldn't help but smile at the thought of Sam thinking those things about you. Then realisation struck. "I used to mean the world to him. Until I told him that I hate him. God that was so stupid. He can't forgive me for that. I can't even forgive myself." You put your head in your hands and sighed. You waited for Cas' response but it never came. You looked back up to where he was sitting and you saw that he had vanished. In his place, was the picture he had taken earlier that day of you and Sam. You held it tightly, as though the memory would disappear if you weren't careful. "Of course I forgive you Y/N." A voice rang out from behind you. Your jaw dropped and you turned around to see Sam standing a few feet away from the bed. "Is it true? You love me?" He asked, blushing slightly. "You... Uh... You heard that, huh?" You laughed nervously. "Yeah, did you mean it though?" He walked and sat beside you on the bed. You crossed your legs and shuffled closer to him. "I did." You admitted. "And I get that you're probably mad at me for today because it was totally out of order and I know it was my fault and I'm just so, so sorry." You breathed. It was good to let it all out. "You know, Y/N, you're the only girl I've ever met who would apologise for nearly drowning. C'mon, it's not your fault." He smiled. "But those things I said..." You objected still believing that it was your fault. "Were perfectly justified. You were scared and confused. I get it. I can't believe you didn't tell me you can't swim, just because you didn't want to disappoint me." He shook his head, unable to make sense of your logic. "Thank you for today Sam, I actually had a really good time." You smiled and rested your head on his shoulder. "It's okay. Y/N, just make sure to tell me if there's something wrong. You know I'm here for you." He leant his head on yours. Slowly, he tilted your head, so that you were facing him. Your faces were centimetres apart, when he placed a hand on your cheek and pressed his lips softly to yours. Even though it was only for a moment, it felt like the whole world had waited just to see the two of you finally come together. You pulled away slightly and smiled shyly. "Is what Cas said true? Do you love me?" You asked him. He laughed and replied. "Maybe" Sam said in a sing-song voice. He kissed you again and you giggled into the kiss. "Well... I love you too. Maybe." You copied him. Sam looked out of the window and noticed how dark it had gotten. He gazed down into your bright e/c coloured eyes. "Hey, guess what we're doing next weekend?" Sam grinned. "What?"

"We're going swimming."
