CATHY

Second week into uni and I was already dying.

"How would you describe the anatomical position?" My human bio tutor asked. She looked around the room, waiting for someone to volunteer an answer. I looked away as she got to me. A hand went up.

"Standing upright with feet forwards, palms facing outwards?" Someone said.

"Yes," the tutor replied, demonstrating.

How did people remember all of this after their exams? I was an information dump. After exams I forgot everything I'd learnt.

"And what is the sagittal plane? " The tutor asked.

Another question I didn't know. She looked at me, and once again I darted my eyes away. She'd probably already pinpointed me as the odd ball. Hopefully she didn't think I was too pathetic. Yet.

"It is vertical and divides the body into right and left," someone else answered.

Things were not looking too good. I thought we were in this together – everyone exactly as clueless as I was. But no. Thankfully, the hour and a half tutorial was over. I headed over to the cupboard and pulled my bag out, hurrying towards the business school for my accounting tutorial.

The glass doors slid open as I approached and I quickly head upstairs. Finding the rooms was still a challenge, but luckily, I remembered where it was from the week before. There was no one waiting outside, so I assumed everyone had already gone in.

I was right. I was late. I squeezed past the two front tables which were full and headed for the one at the back. "Sorry, excuse me. Sorry, excuse me," I repeated.

"What was your name?" The tutor asked.

"Cathy," I replied.

"Alright." He scanned the list in front of him and upon finding my name ticked the box for attendance. "As you all know, half of your grade for this unit is a group assignment. You can have up to three people in a group. I'll give you ten minutes to find a group. If you can't find one, come up here and I'll put you into groups, alright?"

Our synchronised nodding was enough of an answer. I looked around me. People were chatting away, grinning as they clasped onto their friends. This was why it was never good to be late. Without having time to mingle outside, there was no time to meet people, and so when it came to group work, there'd be no group.

"Do you have a group?" The guy next to me asked. He had mildly dishevelled brown hair and brown eyes, like most of the guys around campus.

"No," I replied.

"Cool. Want to form a group?"

"Sure."

Thank the heavens. At least I wasn't alone. I didn't really have the option of picking and choosing.

"I'm Adam by the way," he said.

"I'm Cathy. Nice to meet you," I smiled.

"So, what are you studying?"

"I haven't decided on my majors but I've got the units for human bio, accounting, law and this research one," I replied. "You?"

"Physiology and accounting. Are you thinking of doing anything postgrad?"

"Yeah. I'm in med. You?"

Great conversational skills. My idea of keeping a conversation going was literally just asking Adam the same question he'd asked me. It was amazing to think that Hunter and I never run out of stupid things to talk about.

"Oh really? Guess I'm not the only weirdo taking commerce units when I'm med bound," he grinned.

"I know. A lot of people are taking biomed, but I don't want to deal with all the stress."

He opened his mouth to say something, but the tutor started talking and all conversations ceased with heads turning toward the front.

HUNTER

Hunter checked his phone notifications one last time before walking into the class. Cathy hadn't messaged him all morning about loneliness or misery, so it looked like things were going well for the time being. Hopefully she wasn't feeling too down.

He shoved the phone into his pocket and went inside. The tables had been filled up except for one last one on the left side of the back row. A girl thumbed the pages of her notebook, staring blankly at the front.

"Anyone sitting here?" He asked. She shook her head and he sat down.

"So, what brings you to this class?" She asked.

"Uni wasn't my thing and this seemed alright," Hunter replied. He was seriously regretting his thoughts, judging from the air of boredom about the room and the death in everyone's eyes. He kept his usual straight face and slight menacing look in his eyes– the pre-Cathy era, he liked to think of it. Regardless, it looked like he still had the bad boy air about him, and that leather jacket probably wasn't helping.

"Well...I fucked up my exams. Piece of advice: do not drink the night before your exams," she laughed, tossing her long brown hair over her shoulder. "I'm Layla by the way."

"Hunter," he replied.

"Cool name."

He was about to say "thanks, I got it for my birthday," but he figured only Cathy would appreciate his lame jokes.

"Chill out. This isn't high school," she grinned.
