It was the most important day of my life and this is how I was spending it, in the principal's office with the one person I hate. I look over at Alec and wonder how he can be so calm at this moment. He looks like he always does in his leather jacket and black shirt with black pants combo. Basically he is going for that bad boy vibe. I'm not quite sure it is working for him though. The baddest thing I have ever seen him do is put paper in the trash and not the recycling, but then again he is the talk of all the girls in our school. If my best friend, Nia was here she would probably be all over him. The only problem is, I'm not like Nia.
Alec first started catching girls attention in the 10th grade. He has just turned 16 and puberty had done him well, that much I can't deny. He went from being cute to being downright hot. He had grown to a total height of 6 feet and had definitely been working out. Matched with is chocolate brown eyes and dark brown, almost black hair, he was definitely a sight for sore eyes.
For a little bit there even I had a crush on him, that changed really fast. After he went through about 10 girls in half a year, I totally lost interest in him. Unfortunately I was about the only girl who noticed this, so now as high school seniors, girls still throw themselves at him.
I sit there drumming my fingers on the chair I am sitting on, when he looks at me for the first time since we stepped in there and says, "Can you please stop that?"
I look at him blankly, "Stop what?" I know exactly what he means, but I love to do anything to annoy Alec.
"Drumming your fingers on the chair." He looks away when he finished telling me this. I follow his gaze, it's on the clock.
"Why does it matter if I am drumming my fingers or not?" Again I say this just to push his buttons.
"Because how are we supposed to think about what we have done with you making so much noise?" He smiles at me with a cocky look on his face. I just glare at him. If it was anyone else besides Alec I would've just left this comment alone, but I decided to answer back to him with sarcasm instead.
"Oh is that why you are here? I was called here so the principle could tell me how awesome I am at being a student here." I flash him a very fake smile.
"Woah there, no need to get feisty with me." Alec puts his hands up as if to protect himself from me.
"No need to get feisty with you? You are the reason we are in here!" I almost shout at him.
"Look, I didn't know that we would get busted." As Alec says this he leans back in his chair.
I lose it at this point, "WE? If I recall I didn't do anything. I had the misfortune of walking into a classroom at the exact time you were stealing a copy of our mid tri finals, and the exact time that the teacher decided to come back to his class and saw the two of us there together and assumed that we both were stealing them. I don't deserve to be here missing all of my finals and am probably going to fail all of my classes now, because of you!" I say as I point my finger in his direction.
"Look Stanley, when Mcnealy comes in here I will take the blame if you want."
The way he looks at me seems like there is more to this deal. The only thing is I need him to take the blame, because I didn't do anything wrong! And I feel like if I don't agree he will tell Mcnealy that I was the one who wanted the Final to begin with.
"What's the catch?"
"Oh you just have to go out on a date with me." He says shrugging his shoulders like it's no big deal.
I start laughing the moment he says that. I sound like I am choking in the middle of my laughing fit I am able to get out, "You.... me.... On a....date?" Alec is staring at me like I just went crazy, which I think I have.
"What's so funny about you and me going on a date, Stanley?" There he goes again calling me by my last name. You think it is so hard to call me Sandra, which is my name, but no. Alec Mendis only calls me by my last name, Stanley. I should really start calling him Mendis, but that just doesn't seem right to me.
"It's just that you expect me to go on a date with you after you got me sent to the principal's office?" And after what you did to me in 10th grade, I want to say. Alec just looks at me with a dull expression on his face.
"You think it is a big deal to be sent to the principal's office?" Alec says raising his eyebrows questioningly. Now normally I wouldn't let Alec get under my skin, but I was already mad at him for trying to blackmail me into going on a date with him.
"You think it isn't a big deal? This goes on your permanent record. And then you can't get into good colleges because they all think you are going to cheat on all your tests," I say exasperated, " And I don't know about you, but I want to get into a good college."
Alec is about to say something back to me when Mr. Mcnealy walks into the room.
"Well, isn't it the two troublemakers who got caught." Mr. Mcnealy says as he sits at his desk. Mr. Mcnealy has been the principal at Willow park High School for 15 years now and time has not been kind on him. He is only 55 years old and is already bald, when he started here he had a full set of hair on his head, and any hair on his face is silvery gray. He constantly looks like he is tired and has a reason to be because the kids in our school are just horrible to him.
He can't even be at assemblies anymore because of previous incidents with students and him. The assistant principle is the main face of our school in that way. You might see Mcnealy in the hallways, but even that is rare. If you really want to see him, getting in trouble is your one way ticket to him. Out of a my four years at Willow Park I have never had to be in this room, until now.
"So you two got caught stealing a test, who was the mastermind behind this operation?" Mcnealy says as he folds his hands on his desk leaning closer to Alec and I.
I am about to tell him that it was all a big misunderstanding when ALec speaks before me, "I was the mastermind as to say, it was all my idea to steal the test," Alec looks down at his feet, "I didn't think that I could get a passing grade in Chemistry unless I had the test, I'm so sorry." He said this with so much sincerity that I almost believed him.
"What about the girl?" Mcnealy asks. Again Alec answers for me.
"She was just keeping watch because I asked her to. It's not like she did anything wrong, she was just doing her boyfriend a favor." This causes me to stare at him, but he keeps looking a Mcnealy like he didn't just lie to Mcnealy's face
"Wait, so you two are a thing?" Mcnealy asks with a eyebrow raised like he doesn't quite believe Alec.
"Yeah can't you tell by the way she just throws herself at me?" I make sure to scoot a little farther away from him in my chair after that.
"She just doesn't seem like your type Medis." I try not to get too offended by this comment.
"What can I say?" Alec says as he shrugs his shoulders and leans back in his chair nonchalantly, "There's something special about this one"
"I hate to ruin your guys' moment, but I would like to get out of here before school ends."
"Stanley does have a good point," Mcnealy says. There we go again with the whole last name thing I think. "Because this is your first infraction, Sandra," He says as he turns his chair to look directly at me, "You will spend the weekend here doing community service."
I find myself letting go of a breath I didn't know I was holding in.
Then Mcnealy turns its chair so it is pointing at Alec. "I have let you off the hook one too many times. I think some community service will do you well too."
"I'm sorry Sir, but I don't do work, or come to school on weekends." Alec says with a Whatcha-gonna-do look.
"Well I guess we could arrange something for you," Mr. Mcnealy says.
Alec looks at me with a smile that says it all, look at me I'm not going to get in trouble.
"How about being suspended for a month?" Mcnealy asks Alec.
Alecs' smile disappears real quick after that.
"You know now that I thought about it, I think I am just fine with doing community service."
"Glad we agree on something Mr. Medis."
"Great now I have to spend my weekend with you." I say turning to look at Alec.
"Isn't that every girls dream? I thought you would jump for joy when Mcnealy gave us community service." Alec looks at me with a snug smile on his face that I want to slap off.
"Haven't you noticed that I am not like normal girls?" I say raising an eyebrow.
He takes a step closer to me, "I noticed that, but I was hoping you would change your mind about me."
I try to back away, but he grabs on to my arms. For a minute neither of us say anything. I get mesmerized by his brown eyes. I feel as if we are in slow motion as he slowly leans in closer to me. Suddenly I get pulled out of my tance as the bell rings and students start to pour out unto the hallway. I yank my arms out of his group and start walking down the hall away from Alec. As I look back I see girls start to gather around Alec. I turn around and keep walking. I tell myself that I can't let myself feel anything for Alec.
"You still owe me a date Stanley!" I turn around once more to see the look on his face, but I can't see it through the group of girls around him.
It's his fault I just so happened to miss one of the biggest moments in my life. It just so happened that NIa heard that Ali said that Oliver told her that he was going to ask me out, but because of Alec I was stuck in the principal's office all day so Oliver never had a chance to ask me. So here I am 18 and single. I sulk over to my locker to find Nia standing there.
Nia has been my best friend since the 7th grade when we were the only people in our group of friends in our lunchroom. After that we did everything together. We are inseparable.
Nia is what some people would call nerdy. She wears big frame glasses and always is carrying at least 3 books with her. She always wears her long wavy curly hair down and like to keep out of sight of others.
As I open up my locker Nia starts to question me, "Why weren't you in AP Calculus? You missed the midterm and you know that you can't make those up."
"It's kinda a long story." I say as I grab my bag and computer out of my locker.
"Look we have all the way home to talk." Nia says as I close my locker and she grabs my arm and starts dragging me down the hall.
