And so here the four of us were, seated at a bench where the food stalls were located in the funfair. I suddenly felt like four was a crowd. Nathan was sitting on my right, while Daniel was opposite me with Stella to his left. Ever since Nathan appeared, Daniel had this constipated look-that's the only explanation I got for his look. He was quiet, with his eyes narrowed and eyebrows furrowed and lips slightly pursed. It was safe to say he was definitely annoyed at something, or someone.
"So, what shall we do for the rest of the evening?" Nathan was the first to break the silence that engulfed us the moment we all sat down together.
"We? Who said anything about we?" Daniel was having a stare-down session with Nathan upon hearing his question.
"If I didn't remember wrongly, I came with Beatrice,only,"
"Well, it became 'we' the moment Stella joined us. So having Nathan around doesn't really make much of a difference does it?" Who is he to diss Nathan's presence? Nathan was my friend, and the moment he decided to bring Stella along with our food, it became a crowd. I am not letting him put blame on Nathan because if anybody is to be blamed, it's him and him alone.
"Me? Hey, don't drag me into this!" Now little Ms Blonde decides to speak up.
At this point of time, the tension in the air was so palpable, mainly between Daniel and myself, that I did not notice Nathan and Stella backing away from us. It was finally back to just the two of us, but the atmosphere was definitely not what we started off with.
"Babe, look, could we just start this night anew? I mean, I know we didn't start this evening off right, and there were unexpected disruptions. But could we just make things right with the remaining time we have left? Please?" for the first time ever, I heard sincerity in Daniel's voice. Maybe, just maybe, this really was a date to him.
"Ok, I'm willing to give this evening another shot. What do you have planned next?" I gave him my super rare shy smile. Yes, I can be shy.
"Let's hit the remaining rides then! Come on!" Daniel was once again his cheerful, playful self as he held out his hand for me to hold onto. Without much consideration, I placed my palm on his and he interlinked out fingers and dragged me towards the rides we have yet to try. Of course, I would be lying if I said that the interlinking of our fingers did not make my heart lunge out of my rib cage.
And then, something unexpected happened! I started receiving flowers every 15 minutes! Yes, I was taking note of the intervals-sue me if you wish. It started off with a single red tulip, followed by a yellow tulip. In total, I received 9 different stalks of flowers! Throughout receiving them all from different guys, I kept on turning to Daniel with a puzzled look on my face. He simply shrugged with no expression on his face as any indication that this was his doing.
'Maybe these aren't from him. But who else could they be from? And why me? Are they sure they are giving it to the correct person?' A zillion thoughts went through my mind as I held onto the bunch of flowers.
Of course, everyone at the funfair was giving me weird looks, but I too had no idea what was going on. So in the end Daniel and I boarded the Ferris wheel, our last ride for the night with the 9 stalks of flowers in tow. And then, my answer came.
A few seconds after we got into the carriage on the Ferris wheel, Daniel produced a red rose and held it in front of me. My jaw just dropped as I stared at the single stalk of red rose in front of me.
Seeing my astonished expression and suddenly lack of vocabulary, Daniel spoke up,"I know this must come as a shock to you, but yes, all 10 stalks of flowers are from me. Each stalk represents the number of weeks we have known each other. I thought of giving you 73 stalks of flowers to represent the number of days we have known each other, but figured that would be too many for you to hold."
"In case you haven't realized the meanings behind these flowers, I'm going to explain them to you. The red tulip represents my declaration of love, the yellow tulip represents that I am hopelessly in love and of course the red rose represents passionate love. I hope you understand where I'm going with this," Daniel continued sensing my inability to talk at that moment.
"Are you sure these are for me? Why?" I realized that I had just voiced out my inner thoughts to Daniel while we were at the highest point of the ride.
"Of course they're for you! What do you mean why? Isn't it obvious?"
'Obvious? What was obvious? Was I missing something?' I threw a puzzled look to Daniel in response.
"Myrra said you weren't the best in reading signals with regards to relationships, but I didn't think it was that bad," Daniel mumbled under his breath, thinking that I would not hear him.
I did, obviously.
"Ok, here goes nothing. Beatrice, I like you and I am asking if you would please be my girlfriend?" Daniel slowly enunciated each word as if he was talking to a foreigner. Ok, I am a foreigner, but I have no issues with my English language ability.
Yet of course, I chose that time to give him a blank look-a further indication that I might not have understood him.
"Oh god, what else can I do to make this simpler for you to understand?" Daniel started running his hair through his head of dirty blonde hair, something he always does when he's clueless or frustrated.
"I understand what you are asking for, what I don't understand is why me? There are so many other girls other there that are prettier than me, and waiting in line for you to pick them!" I finally decided to voice my inner most thoughts. The only reason I was not saying yes immediately to his confession is because I am afraid that this is all a prank, that when daylight arrives, the joke is on me.
Due to the limitation of space on the carriage of the Ferris wheel, Daniel could only move slightly to put both of his hands on my shoulders, and turn me slightly to look him straight in the eye.
"Beatrice, don't ever think you're not enough for me. You're perfect for me. I like you and I want to be with you, is that not enough reason for us to be together?" It was a heartfelt confession and plea in one.
"I...I like...I like you as well Daniel. And yes, I would be your girlfriend," I could feel my face turning tomato red while I lowered my gaze to my knotted fingers in my lap.
"That has to be the best thing I've heard all day. You have no idea how long I've waited for this moment!" Daniel moved his hand away from my shoulder and used his index finger to lift my chin up slightly to engage us in eye contact.
"Really? But then why..."
"Why was I slightly cold towards you at the beginning of our date?" Daniel had the uncanny ability to complete my sentences.
I simply nod in silence, slightly ashamed that I was bothered about his behaviour towards me earlier on.
"I'm sorry about that. To be honest, I was nervous. I didn't know how you would react to my plans, and also I need to apologise for Stella's sudden arrival. I definitely did not ask her to join us, I swear!" Daniel was so cute when he was flustered.
"It's ok, I believe you. I also want to apologise for Nathan crashing us beforehand. I also didn't expect to see him." It felt good to get it off my chest.
And then, Daniel gave me his full on, teeth-showing, heartfelt smile and pulled me to his chest. At that very moment, our carriage reached the exit of the Ferris wheel ride and Daniel let go of me slightly, only to interlink our fingers and pull me out of the carriage.
"Come on! The night isn't over yet!" Daniel smiled so hard that the corners of his mouth almost reached his temples.
