Every culture has myths that serve a purpose. Sometimes they are used to explain something that can't be understood with the level of knowledge a society has. Other times, they exhibit ideals that people should follow or behaviors from which they should steer away. One type of myth that every culture has is an explanation for death or at least a prediction about what happens after dying. More often than not, these myths are rooted in the religious values of a society.
In Celtic myth, the King of the Dead, also known as the Ankou, escorts the dead into the underworld and keeps watch over graveyards. There is an Ankou for each parish of a diocese and it takes the form of the last person to die in a year.
Legend says that the Ankou appears as an apparition or a ghost. Some say that the Ankou has two ghost escorts and drives a black horse-drawn carriage. The only thing that is certain is that once the Ankou knocks on your door, there is no escaping death.
