Chapter 1

There was a buzzing on my bed waking me into a groggy state of annoyance. The phone lit up my room for a second and I bit my tongue to keep from going next door and committing manslaughter.

Tanner: I'm so sorry I left you yesterday, can I make it up to you somehow?

"Ugh!" I squealed, threw my phone out of frustration and went back to sleep.

-

As I was drying my hands on my pants my phone started to buzz on the island behind me. I almost forgot it home. Again. I sighed and turned around to check the message.

The name and message on my lock screen made me roll my eyes.

Tanner: hey, do you need a ride this morning? Again, I'm really sorry that I left you yesterday... I had to get to school early.

Me: new phone. Who dis?

I locked the phone and grabbed my bag before making my way to the front door all the while ignoring his messages.

Unsurprisingly his silver Forde was parked outside. God he's such an annoying neighbour.

"Stop looking so happy," I grimaced at him as I closed the door, "I take rides from you because its convenient and also because my mum forces me to. Not because I want them."

"Um... Did you get my messages?" He lightly asked to change the topic whilst starting up the vehicle, "Did you really buy a new phone or were you just ignoring me?"

I raised my eyebrows at him and gave him a sarcastic grin.

"Why'd you ignore me?" He turned his attention to me from the road and gave me a hurt look.

God, his skin was so clear. I scowled at him.

"Because you're so irritatingly nice," I stated exasperatedly, "Now can you please turn your attention back to the road before you kill us?"

"Oh, um sorry," his cheeks flushed and he faced forward again, "I didn't mean to... I just got a little distracted."

I rolled my eyes and squeezed my hands tightly to keep from hitting him for making me feel so uneasy.

When he pulled into the student car park of the school I tried to ignore the way his eyes lit up by not looking at what he was seeing.

"Hey, Luna?" I turned to him and narrowed my eyes, "You don't mind walking this afternoon do you? It's just that Natalie asked me to carry her and her friends to the mall this afternoon."

I rolled my eyes at the sound of his girlfriend's name. He was so naïve it wasn't even funny. It was blatant that the captain of the girls football team was only using him.

"Sure, whatever," I said nonchalantly as the car stopped, "I can't stand being around you for more than one five minute car ride a day anyway."

I know I sounded like an asshole but I really didn't care. Plus, he was used to it by now, we've only known each other since birth. He was always so sweet and it irritated me to no end. I always thought that he had some kind of ulterior motive–I still kind of do–but I've grown to learn that he was a genuinely nice person.

I got out of the car and closed the door behind me before he could even respond and faded through the crowd of people that grew to greet their perfect, perfect prince. I scoffed and made my way into the school building, friendless and unnoticed.

I smoothed my curls with a sigh and headed for my first class. It's all good because I don't have to see Tanner until literature this afternoon.

-

Running the bow over the violin strings one last time I let a content smile settle on my face before the bell that ended lunch rang.

The music room was always empty during lunch save for myself and a few other students who used the facilities religiously. I just used them as an excuse to not have to be around the other students when I don't have to. My stomach churned at the thought of Tanner chatting up a storm, being the social butterfly that he was. I let out a soft infuriated squeal at how fake he was.

"Uh, Are you okay?" I flushed as one of the retreating students, Ying I think, turned and asked me, earning the attention of the entire room, "Luna? Oh, hey! We're going out for pizza since it's Friday, want to join us?"

She and the other two girls gave me a hopeful look and I bit my lip and squeezed my palms together.

"I-I don't know," my cheeks flared and I tucked my frizzed out hair behind my ear, "I'll see."

Ying gave me a knowing smile with a nod before she turned around and disappeared behind the door with her friends who I could already hear talking about whatever teenaged girls talk about with each other.

I loosed a breath and closed my eyes, breathing deeply to settle myself from the meaningless encounter. You're so pathetic Luna, Tanner could have a million conversations like that and actually accept the invitations.

-

"I know it's been a long week and that the school year just began," everyone let out quiet groans and I just held my hands together, "But, I just have to be that teacher and give you lot a very long and complicated assignment that's worth sixty percent of your final grade."

Ms. Telomach was a witch, to put it lightly and I'm sure if I looked up from staring at my lap I could see the satisfaction in her eyes as she consumed our suffering.

"You will be placed in pairs, randomly of course," my stomach fluttered, " You are to write a one thousand word piece about your partner who you will be analyzing for the next two months."

Excited and annoyed mutterings both filled the room and my cheeks warmed when I saw Tanner giving the guy next to him a grin.

"This project is not to be half-assed and done the night before!" She leveled a stare at us that could make Fergie cry and continued, "Analyzation takes time and effort. You are not to tell me that your partner's favourite colour is green and that they like to go on skiing trips! You are to study that person like they are a work of art!"

I looked up to find Tanner staring at me and I held his gaze until Ms. Telomach shook the container with chips of paper in it in front of him.

"Half of these are blank by the way," she moved down the line of students quickly and the closer she got the faster my heart sped up, "You're free to leave once you've collected a name or a blank, but please write your name on the piece of paper and leave it in the bowl on my desk please."

Soon I was the last person seated when she got to me. There was no luck and chance for me seeing as there was only one paper left.

I grabbed the piece of paper and my heart stuttered before opening it.

Tanner  Wiltshire

"Oh you've got to be fucking kidding me," I whispered under my breath and almost tore the paper to bits.
