Micah ended up being wrong. My younger brother didn't cry as I snipped away his long, wavy, brown locks. Instead, he complained and yelled at Jonah and Noah the entire time. By the time it was over, Hugo had a short hairstyle that no longer could be quiffed up.
Needless to say, every time I saw him through out the day, he refused to look up from his feet at anybody let alone me. I was afraid that cutting his hair was going to cause him to have self-esteem issues. However, I knew Hugo was a trooper and that he would get used to his new hair eventually.
"Okay, I'm going to put you guys in pairs," my sociology teacher explained. "I'm going to try to pair you up by boy girl, but that depends if we have an even number."
I sighed as I doodled in my notebook. I loved learning about sociology, but I disliked almost everyone in my class. Being paired up with someone for a project, especially one of the boys, was utter torture. Based on the way Mrs. Martinez was talking about the project, I was guessing it was going to be about relationships.
I really wished Garrett or Aiden was in this class because I knew I would automatically be paired up with one of them. Mrs. Martinez had a soft spot for both Garrett and Aiden and sometimes that worked to my advantage, but not this time.
My eyes scanned across the room to survey all the boys in the classroom and I could only pick out a few faces that I would be willing to deal with. A boy with a fedora named Patrick Stump looked very uncomfortable and I knew he was shy, which was a good thing for me. Right next to Patrick was a boy named Pete Wentz, who was also an okay guy. Another boy with dark curls named Taylor York seemed to be an okay person to work with as well.
But as soon as I heard a familiar voice, I knew who I was going to be paired up with.
"Ah, so you are transfer into this class from personal finance," Mrs. Martinez muttered under her breath, staring down at the paper she was given. "Well, I hope you enjoy this class and we are about to get paired up for a project. Since you just came in, I'll choose your partner."
Everybody in the class groaned about how unfair that was, but I breathed a sigh of relief as Joshua Dun grinned at me, moving towards the back of the room to where I was sitting. I raised my eyebrows as he pulled out a stool to sit down. "Hello, Joshua, fancy seeing you here."
Josh stuck his tongue out at me. "Good to see you too, Chicago, and you should feel honored that I picked you as my partner."
"I don't think honored is the right word. I'm just glad you saved me from pairing up with one of the guys in here." I flipped my notebook shut as Josh leaned over and tried to see what I was drawing. "Why did you transfer out of personal finance?"
He scoffed. "When will I ever need to use math?"
"The only way you will get out of using math for when you are older is dying."
Before Josh could respond with a comeback, Mrs. Martinez cleared her throat and I was surprised to see that everyone was already paired up. "I know you all are wondering what this project about and honestly, it's more of experiment. Don't worry you don't have to write anything down that you will have to turn in."
Most of the class cheered and Mrs. Martinez smiled. "The reason why I paired you guys up boy girl is because this experiment involves relationships. I tried to pair you guys up with people that you hardly talk to or know anything about."
My curiosity was killing me. Usually the experiments were easy to figure out as soon as she started talking, but this one was confusing everyone in the room.
"You will be working on this experiment until the end of the school year which is two months away. You will need to spend as much time with your partner as possible because the goal of this assignment is to see how long it will take for you two to develop feelings for each other or just engage in sexual activity."
Hushed whispers broke out across the room and Josh and I stayed mute as Mrs. Martinez continued. "The data you will have to write down is how often and how long you guys are hanging out together outside of this classroom. I will come around every week and check your data to make sure that some of you are actually trying to get a good grade on this assignment. Every day inside this classroom, you will get to know your partner better and you are not allowed to talk to anyone else besides them. At the end of the year, we will see how many people dated, had sex, or are currently dating each other."
Mrs. Martinez clapped her hands together. "Any questions?"
Many voices sounded and I watched as people began to raise their hands. I just turned back around to face the table. "This project sounds absolutely bizarre," Josh remarked.
"I agree," I said, "I would never date you."
Josh smirked and I could automatically tell that he was planning something. "What are you thinking about, Joshua?"
"Okay," he began. "Let's make a bet."
"What kind of bet?"
"A bet on how long we both think it will take for us to fall for each other."
I raised my eyebrows. "You are on. I bet it will never happen."
The bell rang, preventing Josh from speaking. Everyone darted for the door as I grabbed my stuff, following after them. I didn't bother to wait for Josh because he had to go talk to Mrs. Martinez, but as soon as I stepped out into the hallway, I felt an arm snake around my shoulders and Josh's breath against my ear.
"Give it two weeks and you'll be screaming my name."
