Day out/ worst fears

Start from the beginning

"Excuse me are you alright love?" A soft, elderly voice questioned earning the attention of both girl and dog.

Caelen nodded glancing questingly towards a suddenly alert Padfoot.

"Are you out here by yourself?" The woman pressed.

"I'm not alone," Caelen mumbled digging her fingers into Padfoot's thick black coat.

The old woman glanced around curiously, "are you certain? I'm not trying to frighten you love it's just, if you were alone, if you needed any help...it's not safe for a little child to be out here on her own..." She trailed off glancing around again.

"I'm fine, my godfather is close by," Caelen responded seeming to decide the woman meant no harm, "snuffles and I just wanted to have a picnic on our own, didn't we snuffles?" She patted the dogs head earning a bark. Caelen couldn't help but notice it wasn't his usual cheerful bark, this one was deeper almost aggressive. When the woman glanced around again the young Lupin took the opportunity to scurry away black dog close behind.

The duo ran quickly back to Grimauld place. They breezed into the house, Sirius changing to himself as they went, both laughing and breathing heavily. Heavy footfalls alerted them they were not alone. Sirius quickly shoved his goddaughter behind him, laughter dying in his throat abruptly.

In the open doorway of the kitchen stood a livid Remus Lupin. His hands shook with the force of his fury and his eyes flashed dangerously. "Caelen," he began in a deceptively calm voice, "go upstairs."

"Daddy I-"

"-NOW!"

The little girl hurried to obey rushing up the stairs with barely a backward glance for her godfather or father. Sirius shifted nervously, "Remus er I..."

"Sirius," the tawny haired man growled raising his hand to pinch the bridge of his nose in what, Sirius supposed, was meant to be a calming action. "Sirius, in what realm of the imagination did you suppose taking Caelen out on your own was a good idea?"

The man shifted biting his lip anxiously, it wasn't often Remus actually got angry with him but when he did Sirius was never completely sure what to expect. "Remmy we just wanted to get out, we'd been cooped up here for months we were getting jumpy." The Black heir all but whined.

Remus growled as he crossed his arms over his chest, Sirius imagined to keep from strangling him. "Would you happen to remember why you've been stuck here for months? And if you did, while you were recalling the reasons behind your captivity did it even for a moment occur to you what would happen to Caelen, a werewolf, if she were caught with a wanted convict?!"

Sirius hung his head, "I could have said I'd kidnapped her..."

"And with any other child that would work but as a 'dark creature' they'd be all too happy to throw her in Azkaban alongside you!!" Lupin shouted, "how do you think Caelen would manage surrounded by dementors in Azkaban Sirius? With her past, everything she's been through..." The man sighed rubbing a now shaking hand across his face and whispered, "how do think I'd manage with both of you gone? It was easier last time, thinking you were a traitor, I could be angry. I didn't have to be heartbroken and miss you because, you had wronged me, us. I wouldn't have that defense now Padfoot," Remus' voice broke as his eyes filled with tears, "losing you and Caelen together would kill me."

Sirius closed the distance between them quickly, enveloping his shaken best friend into his arms. "I'm not going anywhere Remmy, not again I swear it! I'm sorry I was reckless, I'm sorry I included Caelen in that recklessness, you didn't really expect anything else from me though did you?" He attempted to joke as he awkwardly rubbed circles in the, all but sobbing, werewolf's back.

"I was hoping maybe you'd grown up a bit," Remus laughed through his sniffles.

Sirius grinned, knowing they were on the tail end of his friend's temper, and handed him his handkerchief. "Ah you should really know me better than that by now moony, I'll never grow up!"

"Yes I see that," Remus chuckled lightly before growing serious once more, "I mean it you know, I'd never survive losing the both of you."

A muscle twitched in Sirius' jaw as he imagined how he'd feel in a similar situation. "I know Remmy, me too. You, Caelen, Harry, Tonks and Andromeda, you're all I've got. I don't have much of a relationship with Tonks or Dromeda, it's been years. Losing you, Harry, or Caelen, I don't know if I could go on."

Neither man noticed the small girl inch down the stairs and slip up behind them, "honestly look at you two sobbing like a pair of old women. You'd think someone had died!" She teased her father and godfather with a grin.

Both men let out a shaky laugh, hurriedly wiping their eyes before rounding on the grinning child. "Oy you cheeky little minx!" Sirius scolded, "how do you think we should handle this sass moony?"

Remus grinned taking three long steps toward his nervously grinning child, "oh I don't know Padfoot, she seems to enjoy laughing..."

The men lunged forward, Caelen squealed nearly falling over in her haste to run away. Grimauld place wasn't so quiet anymore. Pounding feet raced through the old building. Squeals, shrieks, and laughter permeated the air as the old friends caught the child. The trio rolled around on the floor tickling each other and laughing till they gasped and tears rolled down their cheeks. For a moment it didn't matter that their world was at war, it didn't matter that two were ostracized dark creatures and the third a wanted convict, it didn't even matter that somewhere on a landing a hag in an old portrait was screeching insults, the only thing that mattered was that for the moment they were safe. For one brief moment in time they were a family and laughing and together.
