I remember the day like it was yesterday. The sky was as black as ever. The air was practically as unbreathable as usual. Basically, it was a normal day. I was about 10 years of age, and everything seemed basically normal. My father was out working. My mother was checking the air filters in our safe-house. She always does this when father isn't home, because when he's gone for work, he's normally gone for about 4 days. He works at the largest steel mine in the world, and he's the smart one in our household. Anyway, little me was just sitting at our kitchen table drawing super heroes, as usual. It was always a dream of mine to have some sort of super power. Suddenly, I saw a bright light shine through the skylight in the ceiling. This was extremely unusual, considering that government officials no longer used aircrafts of any kind anymore. Also the sky was practically pitch black at all times. So, I decided to investigate. I snuck past my mom and grabbed my gas mask that was hanging by the door that leads out of our safe-house. I quietly undid the latch and stepped outside after putting my gas mask on.

You see, outside has never been very safe for kids. I mean, the entire world is practically a safety hazard (No thanks to the government). But hey. When a kid is curious, nothing can get in their way.

So, I started looking around. I looked up at the sky; didn't see anything. Looked at the barren metal wasteland that surrounded us and our cluster of safe-houses; nothing and no one. I even decided to crawl on top of our safe-house and check the skylight; nothing.

I decided to sit down and relax. Just enjoy my surroundings, if that was even possible in a shit hole like this.

A few minutes later, that's when I saw it again. A bright light shining through those jet black clouds covering the sky. I stood up, and stared in awe at the beautiful glow of this object.

Suddenly, it got brighter. And brighter. And brighter. It almost seemed like it was getting closer by the second.

Just then was when I realized something was wrong. Although it got closer and closer, it seemed to be growing dimmer the closer it became.
Suddenly, whatever it was became a lot more clear. It began to look like a creature of some sort. As it grew closer, I could make out more details of this thing. It had large bug like wings, and long arms with great claws. It had a head that looked like a wolf, even though they're far extinct. It's entire body was black and it had a large spiked, purple lizard-like tail. It was the stuff of nightmares.

I stood up, terrified as to what would happen next. I think it must've spotted me, because it began to fly in my direction.

Panicked, I looked around for a weapon. My dad had left his work wrench on the roof next to the skylight, so I quickly picked it up.

Wait a minute. Now that I look back on this moment, why didn't I just get inside? Damn I was stupid. They're called safe-houses for a reason... I should've just went inside and told mom so that she could call the mafia (basically the local government) to come take care of it.

But no. Little me had to be all heroic. The thing kept growing closer, and I had the wrench in my hands like a baseball bat.

Suddenly, the thing gave out a terrifying screech, and it was flying towards me at such a great speed. I didn't know what to do. I lowered the wrench and looked around quickly for the easiest and fastest way to get off my roof and to safety.

But it was too late. In a matter of seconds, the thing was mere feet away from me.

So I jumped off the roof. I was pretty sure that I broke my leg, and it hurt like hell. I began screaming for help, but at the very moment, the creature landed on top of me with a great thud. Both of its legs were on either side of my body. It's large claws had my arms pinned down. I began to cry in fear. The thing gave out a mighty roar.

Then, it raised one of its clawed hands off of my left arm. I lifted my free hand to try and cover my face. That must've been the last straw for the thing. It clawed at my left arm, and I yelped in pain. It seemed that whenever I made noise, it made the thing angrier. So, it bit my lower left arm off with its ferocious sharp teeth.

I screamed in pain. I couldn't help it. I didn't know what to do. I was little. And absolutely terrified.

The thing raised it's claw again, but this time, it's entire hand was covered with some sort of bright green sludge that was dripping off it's claws.

It clawed at my right eye. It was deep, and I couldn't see out of my eye, but it was somehow still there.

I bit my lip in pain. The thing lowered its face close to mine, and it gave out a deep growl.

It slowly opened its huge mouth in front of my face. It had a huge blue tongue, and its large, ivory teeth were coated with my blood.

At that moment, I practically accepted death. I closed my eyes, and waited for my head to be mutilated by this foul, unknown creature.

Then all I heard was a loud ringing, and the thing jerked away from my body. I opened my eyes dizzily, and the thing was lying next to me, bright blue blood pouring out of its side. My head was pounding and my body hurt everywhere. I looked up, just in time to see a group of slightly older kids standing far in front of another safe house. They all wore tattered clothes, and some were missing limbs and had terrible gashes or wounds. Each of them carried an ancient looking weapon of some sort. A boy who seemed a few years older than me pointed in my direction, said something to the group of kids, and began to ran towards me. My vision went blurry, and blood loss took my consciousness away before the boy reached me.
