Connie Beauchamp's day had started at 5am, her shift had started at 7am, but she was there an hour early, as usual. Her shift should've finished at 5:30pm. It was now 8pm, and Connie was still in her office slaving over her paperwork. She found it easier to be working, because the alternative was to be at home. Home meant that she was constantly reminded of what had happened. Whereas at work she was able to forget about it, about him. She was able to concentrate on her patients and the department rather than her car crash of a life.

An email popped up on her computer, which she opened and read, she was about to reply when Charlie knocked and entered.
'Shouldn't you be at home?' He
asked, shutting the door behind himself.
'I'd rather not be. Hansen is breathing down my neck about the figures of the department, and I need to get all this sorted out to be sure that everything will be okay when I hand them over to him. ' She told him, typing away on her computer.
'Can't Zoe do that?' Charlie asked, worried about Connie.
'Hansen came to me. Anyway, I would rather do it myself. It puts my mind at rest.' Connie explained, resting her hands on the desk in front of her, and looking up at Charlie. 'Fine.' Charlie sighed, raising his hands in the air. 'Oh, Jacob was looking for you earlier. Did he speak to you?'
'Well, he handed me a letter of resignation before storming out.' Connie replied, Charlie noticed that sadness had crept into her voice.
'Ring him. Talk to him.' Charlie told her, before walking out.
Connie and Jacob had become close friends, they were able to open up to one another. However, Jacob had a massive secret that he wasn't telling Connie, and Connie was not telling Jacob something either. They both thought that their friendship would be placed in jeopardy if they told one another, and they both needed each other, more than either of them realised.

Connie was sad that Jacob had resigned, and that he also seemed angry with her. She pondered on what Charlie had said, and pulled her mobile out.
'Yes?' Jacob asked, picking the phone up.
'Are you okay?' Connie asked, noticing that Jacob sounded annoyed.
'Fine.' He replied sharply, sighing heavily.
'Look, I need to talk to you. Can I come to yours?'
'Sure.' Jacob replied.
'Good, I'll be there in around twenty minutes.' Connie told him, before hanging up.

Twenty minutes later and Connie was entering Jacobs house. She placed her bag and shoes by the door and her coat over the banister.
'Want a drink?' Jacob asked, walking through to the kitchen.
'Can I just have some orange juice please?' Connie replied, following Jacob into the kitchen.
'How is the little one?' Jacob asked, grabbing a glass off the side.
'Doing well, it was kicking a lot last night.' Connie smiled, rubbing her stomach.
'It's going to be as feisty as its mother.' Jacob smirked, pouring some orange juice into the glass. ' Have you got any names yet?'
'Yes, Noah Jacob or Ryan Jacob for a boy, and Isabella Ruby or Scarlett Holly for a girl. I prefer Noah for a boy, but if it's a girl I'll let you chose.' Connie smiled, before taking the drink off him and walking through to the lounge.
'I like Isabella Ruby.' Jacob told her, sitting next to her on the sofa.
There was a short silence before Connie spoke up again.
'I don't want you to resign. Therefore, I'm going to reject your resignation.'
'Connie, I understand. But I need to have some time off.' Jacob told her.
'Why?'
'Look, I'm going to tell you this, but I don't want you to be upset, I just need your support.' Jacob said, rather reluctantly. Connie nodded and placed her glass on the coffee table.
'Okay.' Jacob sighed. 'Around five months ago, I started having ridiculously painful headaches, mainly in the mornings, they would go away before lunch. I thought it was just because I was stressed, but then I started to become really tired, most of the time. I started going to sleep earlier, making sure I got at least ten hours sleep a night, that didn't help. Then, I was out with some friends a few weeks ago, and they told me that my pupils were dilated and I was just about to drive a few of the lads home, but just before I got into the car I had a seizure. I was taken to St. James', where they ran some tests and took an MRI.' Jacob, told her before stopping and rubbing his face with his hands.
Connie sighed, she knew what was happening.
'Brain Tumor.' She whispered, tears forming in her eyes.
Jacob nodded, before taking Connie's hand.
'They believe it's treatable, they said that they would operate, to remove it. Then I'll have around 3 months of chemotherapy, and tests to make sure it has completely gone.' Jacob told her, before Connie reached across and hugged him.
