I sit in the airport, waiting for my flight to come in. I had spent the summer in England. There is a new program going on which the organization thinks that they could change the world. They're calling it the Soulmate Project.
They take elaborate tests that are spread over the course of a week. These tests will match you to your soulmate and tell you the exact moment that you'll meet your soulmate. But your soulmate has to have the watch too, otherwise they won't recognize you as their soulmate.
Right now, they are in the testing stage. The subjects (people they are testing on) all received a watch. It will zap you when you meet your soulmate. They are hoping to get more advanced and actually tell you when you will meet your soulmate. Like a countdown your entire life until the moment you meet your soulmate. But they aren't that advanced yet.
My name is Lilah Hesler. I'm one of the first "subjects" to test this new soulmate project. I'm 18, which is the legal age I have to be to be part of this project.
Anyways, so I'm sitting in the airport for my flight. Why is it taking so long? The flight is already delayed 2 hours! I walk to the food court in the terminal to get a snack.
"All passengers going to New York City, please start boarding," the lady says over the intercom. Finally!! I don't live in New York City, but from there I am transferring onto a plane to Minnesota.
I walk over to my bags and pull out my passport and boarding pass. I head towards the line and wait for everyone before me to head into the gray thing that connects the plane to the building. Does that gray thing have a name? Or is it just called "the gray thing?" Sorry, I get easily sidetracked.
I soon find myself at the beginning of the line and hand the lady my ticket and passport. She rips my ticket and hands me the half I get to keep. I reach down to grab my duffle bag and see him. The guy is standing straight, with confidence oozing from him. He turns around when he feels my gaze on him.
My clock starts vibrating and zaps my wrist. I cry out in pain. The flight attendant looked at me in panic. Another attendant saw what was happening and a look of recognition passed across her face. She quickly ushered me onto the plane, me struggling the entire way. I didn't want to leave. I want to be with my soulmate.
She sits me down in a first class seat and straps me down. "Sweetheart, you have to stop. This is going to hurt a little, but it's for the best."
She pulled a pocketknife out of her dress pocket and I started to panic. She holds my arm down and pulls out another strap which she ties around my arm. The clock is still shocking me and the pain is terrible now. They said it would be a zap, not a long burning hot pain.
She opens the pocket knife and moves it towards my arm. I try to move away, but the straps hold me in place. "Stop moving. We have to remove the watch or it'll get worse." She moves the knife toward my watch.
To my surprise, she slowly slides the knife under my watch, she didn't stab me. She moved the knife around and the burning stopped. But it must have transferred to the knife because the flight attendant clenched her teeth in pain.
She moved the knife from left to right until it made it to a strap. Then she started cutting through the strap, as quickly as she could. I was now just sitting in the chair, not moving at all. She pulls the broken watch off my wrist and hands it to me.
"Here, at least you can see him." I look down at the watch and see the guy's face engraved in it. I see him a bit more clear now. He has dirty blonde hair, green eyes and a square jaw line.
He looked like a stereotypical bad boy from a romance novel. With one major difference, his nose didn't look crooked like it had been broken. It was sharp and straight. He had a hard look in his eyes. I wouldn't like to be caught on the opposite side of that stare.
That was basically all I knew about him. I also knew he was tall from my glance, but don't know how tall. I looked at the watch a bit more and found his name on the back. But it looks blurry, like it didn't have a chance to finish engraving the name.
Maybe that was why it burned so much. I look closer and realize only the last name is engraved. There is a spot where the first name started to be carved, but it's a big smudge now.
"Larke" I said, testing out his last name. "Lilah Larke." The name has a ring to it. It's an alliteration. I move to get up, but realize I'm still strapped down.
"Excuse me. But can you let me go?" I call out to where the flight attendants are gathered together, talking in hushed voices.
"We can't let you get out of your seat yet. Not until the withdrawal symptoms pass." Says the one who cut my watch off.
Withdrawal symptoms? "What?!" I ask.
"You're going to start fighting to get to the person on your watch, but we're can't let you out. Not until we know all the passengers will be safe. You can't leave the plane, since you have already boarded, and you'll be a big risk to the other passengers until we get over the sea where you will not be able to do anything to get out and most likely kill yourself."
"Please fasten your seat beasts. The plane will be moving in a moment." A voice says over the intercom. My body starts to fidget, trying to get out of the bonds. I understand now what they meant when they said withdrawal. I wanted my soulmate, but I couldn't do so at the risk of my life. There would be other ways to see him again very soon.
I'll search him up on Google and we'll start a pen pal/ email thing. I sit back comfortably in the seat and smile at the thoughts that enter my head. The flight attendant looks at me in disbelief, probably wondering what was wrong with me.
"Why are you smiling? This is where the worst symptoms usually show up." She asks, inching towards me.
"I'm enjoying myself in first class." I said with a smile. She rolls her eyes and heads to her seat, and gets there right before we start taxiing. I look out the window, my plans forming. I will see Him soon enough.
