Surely, Lucy thought as she looked back at her brothers and sister, who were picking apples in the orchard of Caire Paravel, if I could just slip away for a moment, I'd be back before they realised I was missing.
She hated that her siblings were over protective of her. She was fourteen, tall and owned a dagger. She was more capable of looking after herself than her siblings knew.
'Lucy,' Peter, the older and superior brother, called over to her. 'Try not to run off again, eh?' The other two laughed at their brother's witty comment, whilst Lucy turned as red as the apples that they were picking. She yanked one off the tree she was leaning on and threw it at Peter, instead hitting Edmund in the back of the head.
'OW!' Ed shouted, before lobbing one at Lucy, and soon all four were laughing and chucking apples and berries at each other,
scaring birds that flew up ahead.
Lucy looked to the floor and sulked.
'I don't want to leave.' She said, pushing a strand of hair behind her ear.
'Lu,' Susan took her sister by the hand. She stared at her brothers and looked back. 'We're never leaving!' She pulled Lucy in and started to tickle her. When she was crying for mercy, Lucy looked at her siblings and grinned.
'Can't catch me.'
She darted off down the large hill, and into the forest. Her siblings called her name, but she ran faster than an animal being hunted. She'd always play these games back in London. The sun danced through the leaves, the smell of the earth filled her nose. When the ground was wet, she hoisted up her vast amount of skirts and hopped across the worst parts. Never stopping, she turned around. Her brothers and sister weren't there.
Lucy lost her footing and tripped on a tree root, ripping her gown on her descent.
'Ed? Peter?' She called into the forest. No reply. 'Susan?'
All at once, the forest suddenly became a more threatening place. The trees bent their branches in Lucy's direction, and the sun had long gone, sending an unsettling wind to force itself through the leaves.
Lucy began to panic. A bird above her decided to flee it's nest, making Lu jump out of her skin.
She slowly rose from the ground, brushing dirt off the back of her sliver gown. Instinctively, she took the dagger out of the sheath around her waist, and began to venture forward. Just beyond the forest, would be the beach, and she could call up to her siblings and let them know she was fine.
After a while walking, Lucy heard a twig snap amongst the dense woods to her left. All at once she slightly quickened her pace, and came to where the end of the forest should have been. She turned around. No one was there. Her brothers and sister ha not caught up with her. She turned back around, and where the thick army of trees just minutes before had been, an old oak wardrobe was in its place. It was identical to the one that brought her to Narnia. She traced the ornate carvings in the wood. There was a familiar sense of magic surrounding it, except, in a strange way, it wasn't the same that Lucy was used to. She proceeded to open the door. She looked over her shoulder, night time had fallen almost as quickly as the sun rose that day. Susan probably came to the conclusion that Lucy would return when she was hungry, and the boys probably believed her.
I'll be back in a minute. Lucy stepped on foot inside the wardrobe. Something was stopping her. No. I'm heading back. And, just as she decided to turn, something from behind her pushed her inside, and locked the door, submerging her in darkness.
