[ prologue ]

the smell of the smoke and the harsh wheezing and coughing coming from Erika was all that kept me going.

I could hear her crying for help out loud. her mind was saying the opposite though.

she wanted to die in that moment. she was in pain and she didn't want to live anymore. the smoke filling her lungs, the wooden pillar on her leg.

she was scared.

I finally reached her and I saw relief and happiness fill her face. she smiled but, winced as soon as she did so.

her face was smudged with black dust and dirt. her brown hair was in knots and her smile was still as astonishing as when I first met her millennia ago.

I threw the wooden pillar off of her and she gave me a confused look. a look of disbelief. I wouldn't blame her. she was raised with humans in this lifetime.

she doesn't know the power she wields. she doesn't know how powerful she really is. she doesn't know what lays beyond the human world.

I picked her up and carried her bridal style. she buried her face into my chest to avoid smelling the smoke.

I knew it was wrong.

to fall in love with her.

to even meet her.

I knew it was sinful but, I did it either way. I don't regret it.

I let my fiery wings burst out of my back and made my way out of the building. she didn't seem to notice. she was well passed out.

I picked up the pace and when we were out of the building, I flew to the shelter.

when we were on the front porch, I retracted my wings and set her down.

I kissed her on her forehead as a goodbye, because if I stayed shed beg me not to go.

if she begged me not to go, I wouldn't. I'd cut my wings off for her. I'd be rid my power if possible just to be with her.

but, I can't.

when she wakes up she'll know what happened. she'll know who she is. she'll make a decision.

the one thing she won't know is who I am.

until we meet again.
