Chapter 09 (Part Three)

“

So, where's Andrea?” he asked Justin. Justin paused, thinking for a second before shrugging.

“

Probably with her boyfriend. She got a job, by the way. She's a waitress. Probably so she has something to do.” Justin said, then stopped as his eyes widened a little, like he said something he wasn't supposed to. Nathan raised an eyebrow and was about to ask more questions, but Vince's loud voice cut him off.

“

So I'm starving. Who's picking up the check?” he asked. Everyone was silent. Nathan certainly wouldn't be, that's for sure.

“

Well I have no money on me, and Nathan has to save his, and Justin is a guest, so he shouldn't have to pay.” Skyler explained with a smile. “So I guess it's on you and Thomas.”

“

Aw, come on, really? I can't pay for the amount I eat!” Vince complained. Skyler snorted.

“

Eat less.”

“

Don't worry, I got it.” Thomas assured the group, shaking his head a little with a sigh. “You guys are useless.”

Vince gave him a smile, saying 'thank you' before going back to a conversation with Skyler. Thomas rolled his eyes a little, watching the two. Nathan took the opportunity to harass Justin.

“

So. She needs something to do, huh?” he asked quietly. Justin stiffened a little, squirming in his seat. It was one of the few times Nathan hadn't seen him willing to talk, and it was a little unnerving.

“

It's not a big deal. It was stupid anyway.” Justin murmured. Nathan frowned.

“

...What was?”

Justin was silent for a long moment, seeming to visibly debate something before sighing quietly. “Dad called.”

Nathan paused, his eyebrows raising in surprise. Sure, he was aware that Justin's parents didn't have the best relationship, but he hadn't seen that coming. “When?” he asked.

“

A few days ago. Remember when me and 'Drea came to Varian's because Mom was rearranging everything?”

“

Yeah.”

“

The day before that. He called the house, and was talking to Mom for a little while. Said something about wanting to see me and 'Drea. Of course, that started an argument.”

Nathan frowned. “Damn. Sorry,” he mumbled. Justin shrugged again, shaking his head.
