However, if they went to get food, he fully planned to go with them. Silence be damned.
Thursday April 5th, 1945
While at the store today with Cercea, I almost quite literally ran into Helen. In fact, I didn’t recognize her, my childhood friend. I was used to her honey blonde hair and blue eyes. What I got instead were eyes so dark they were black, and matching black hair. I wasn’t expecting her to be in Arkansas, in my little town of Mena.
She looked happy though, a young Changed vampire with mouse colored hair in her company. She introduced him to me as Ronald, and then proceeded to show Cercea and I that she was expecting. I wondered briefly if this would upset her, and while her heart rate picked up, she didn’t look perturbed. For Helen to have met Ronald and been pregnant as she was with her wedding before hand, she would have conceived on her wedding night. I found it odd, and it still bugs me. Cercea and I have been together for two years now, and still no sign of a child. Yet Helen, six months into her marriage, already well into her second trimester.
To call me jealous, I believe, is not an understatement.

Varian slammed the book shut and bolted off his bed, running out of his room and down the hall to outside. He didn’t stop until he was down the road and pounding on Helen’s door.
“Helen!” he yelled, beating his fist to the wooden door. “Helen, open up and let me in! I have something I need to say to you!”
There wasn’t any movement on the other side of the door, and Varian hit it harder and faster, his breathing heavy, anger boiling in his veins.
“God damn it, somebody let me in!” he snarled, glaring at the chipped wood, smears of blood left by his palms each time he hit the door.
Moments later the door swung open and a very white-faced Jecklynn appeared, her eyes wide.
Varian paused, staring at her a moment, feeling his heart rate increase and his stomach coiling before he shook it off and met her gaze.
“
Jecklynn. I need to see Helen. I know she’s home,” he growled.
Her eyes darted to his hands, and now that Varian was actually calm enough to listen, he heard soft little splatters on wood.
“
Varian, your hands…” Jecklynn breathed. “You’re bleeding.”
He glanced down, only to see beads of blood welling up and dripping onto the porch. Blinking, he looked back up. “I’ll be fine. Please, I need to talk to Helen.”
It wasn’t a moment later that Helen appeared behind her niece, tying a bathrobe around her.
“I’ll come outside with you. Jecklynn, grab a hand towel,” she instructed, stepping past her as Jecklynn ran off to get what was asked of her. Her black eyes looked Varian over as she stepped over the threshold and past him, onto the porch and took a seat on the wicker chair Jecklynn had used a while ago.
