Chapter 09 (Part Two)

"What did she look like the last time you saw her?" Ace asked, slowing his walk. Nathan slowed as well, looking down to his feet. There went his hypothetical situation.

"Brown hair, and her eyes were darker. Way darker."

Ace stopped in his tracks and regarded Nathan closely. "We're supposed to cover this next month, but, it sounds like you've got a Nether vampire on your hands."

...A what?

Nathan stopped too, still looking at his feet. "And what's a Nether vampire?" 

"They're a new species discovery wise, but they've been around since before the first Mortals Changed. They aided in that actually," Ace told him. "An all female race, they live for the meeting of their one mate."

Nathan raised his eyebrows. "Damn."

"They only have one mate, and their one mate will only surface in their lifetime once. If they miss the opportunity they're stuck here on earth."

Nathan nodded slightly, then frowned. If Jecklynn is supposed to be looking for her “one mate”, then why the hell wouldn't she leave Varian alone? Maybe she missed her mate or something...no, that's impossible, she was roughly the same age as Nathan. Seemed a bit early to miss them.

...Varian has a female mate. He'd only ever met his male ones. Jecklynn was female.

"They're a ruthless species, doing whatever they can to get what they want," Ace went on. "Before they meet their mate, they're blond and have blue eyes. Once they meet their mate, the stronger their relationship grows, the darker their hair and eyes get. Eyes are the first to change, they'll turn black and their hair will follow suit."

Nathan glared slightly. He refused to acknowledge this. There was no fucking way that things could possibly be that fucked up. Was there?

"As far as I know, she only spends time with Varian. Why isn't she with her mate?"

A stupid question. He knew the answer.

Ace sighed quietly. "She is."

Nathan went silent for a minute, still glaring down at his feet. "...Thank you, for um...the help. I appreciate it," he mumbled.

"From the sounds of it, he doesn't know. It's not his fault. If she hasn't kissed him yet, you're fine, and since he's already bonded to you, she can't take him from you."

Then why keep going after him? Nathan voiced his question.

"I can't tell you her reasoning Nathan," Ace said quietly. "But many Nethers try so hard because they only have one chance with their mate. The only way to really know would be to ask her yourself."
