Chapter 09 (Part Two)

"Naturally, a dumb person would pick up said snake, because it wasn't much bigger than a garter snake anyway. At this point, Evan's looking at it and telling me I'm an idiot, and that I should put it down," Ace said with a snort. "Word of advice, always listen to Evan. He knows what he's talking about. Me, on the other hand, being his older cousin ignored him. And I'm standing under this tree, with a big branch above me and suddenly I feel this scaly thing touch my shoulder."

Nathan raised an eyebrow at that.

"And I look, seeing what is obviously the end of a big snake's tail. And I think to myself, 'if this is the tail, where's the head?' and I can see Evan and Kai backing off out of my peripheral vision. So I turn to see what they're looking at, and there's this really angry looking snake head right in front of my face, and she's flicking her purple tongue at me," Ace said, gesturing to how big the snake head was and how far from his face. "So I backed up, and my boot momentarily caught on a root, making me flail, and the little snake, which I later learned was a baby boa constrictor latched onto my thumb with it's teeth and wouldn't let go."

Nathan pretended to reach up and rub his neck with the arm closest to Ace, hiding a smile at the story.

"I saw that," Ace said, smiling too. "In the end, after I struggled to get it off, Kai pried the little demon from my thumb and Evan took it and returned it to its mother. Needless to say, we went right back onto the main trail and didn't deviate from it after that. Have a scar from it too," he said, holding out his left hand to Nathan. Sure enough, on his thumb there was a little jagged white semi-circle, near the pad of his finger. Nathan looked at it for a second and shook his head with a quiet sigh, still smiling.

"So, hope that story was entertaining for you."

"Wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Based on how I usually see Evan, I was a little apprehensive to ask."

Ace smirked, shaking his head. "He wouldn't make you ask me anything he knew might get you in trouble. Not if he's your boyfriend's friend like you say he is."

"He is. Saw him Friday when I went home. That was when he told me to ask."

"See? He must really like you if he's actually engaging in conversation with you. Might have something to do with your mate though. He's pretty protective of mates."

"Well, he's also currently seducing my best friend, so that might also have something to do with it." Nathan said with a casual shrug.

Ace laughed. "That boy. Just barely seventeen and trying too hard to find a suitable mate. I wish he wasn't so reckless."

Nathan shrugged again. "He seems pretty happy with Justin so far, so I'm not going to say anything. As long as neither of them fucks the other one over, I don't really care."

"So he's been your friend for more than a couple days?" Ace asked interestedly.

"Yeah. I met him in the middle of my senior year of high school."

Ace seemed surprised by that answer. "That's interesting."
