Chapter 09 (Part One)

Start from the beginning

"Isn't she a bit young for that though?" he asked, turning to look at Jecklynn who gazed up at him from his shoulder.

She smiled a little. "Both of you were born to two Changed vampires right? Well, their children tend to mature faster."

"I suppose," he replied, staring back at his lap.

"Has her appetite and moods changed lately too?"

Well, now that she brought that up, Varian could see Jecklynn was right. He hadn't really noticed, he just figured it was all part of growing up.

"Yes. What does that have to do with anything?"

Jecklynn sighed. "You're very well educated for a boy, but I don't think you're getting what I'm hinting at."

"Apparently not."

"Well Varian, she might very well be coming up on womanhood. If that happens, you can't freak out. She'll be just as confused about it as you are."

Womanhood? What was that supposed to mean? Venerra was a girl. Only eight. Girls were only considered women after their first...oh.

His eyes widened and he sighed, covering his face and leaning his head back against the couch behind him. "I really don't need to worry about that right now," he mumbled from behind his hands.

Jecklynn's hand came up and took one of his, pulling it down. "Well, now you've had a warning. I'm not saying that's what it is, but just in case I wanted you to have a heads up."

"Still not thrilled about it," he muttered.

She laughed, letting go of his hand and hugging him. "Well, you should get the proper items of preparation for her. Just in case. I'll go with you if you want."

Just what he needed, a store run. Life could be really annoying.

"Dear God, please tell me you brought me some pancakes."

Nathan smiled at Vince, who had joined him in hanging out outside of Ace's classroom. "Nope, sorry. Slipped my mind."

Vince groaned loudly in frustration, leaning against the wall. "Fucking hell. I haven't eaten anything all day. I'm starving," he whined. Nathan raised an eyebrow.

"Why didn't you eat?"

"Fuck if I know. I don't know why I do half the shit I do."

Nathan rolled his eyes slightly, pulling out his phone to check the time. He was pretty happy to note that class started in a couple minutes. He was less happy to note that he only had Ace's class once a week. At least it was a long class.

He was slightly surprised when the professor in question came into the hall, pointing to himself and Vince, and then the classroom. Nathan and Vince got the hint, making their way in as Ace told them to grab their textbooks as well.

Nathan and Vince took their books with them to their seats as Ace sat in his chair at the front. The rest of the class slowly filed in, grabbing their books from the closet. Once everyone was settled in, Ace cleared his throat. "Alright, so, we got to Mortals last class. This time, we're going to get more in depth. Starting with the characteristics of them."

A few students nodded absently, flipping through the text pages. Everyone was listening intently though, so Ace went on. "First and foremost, are the eyes. Mortals have eyes that change color according to their moods," he said, looking around the room at each Mortal present. "Sometimes they have a personality that reflects through their eyes, like Nathan. Who is apparently irritated most, if not all, the time."
