"Oh come on, it's not THAT scary."

A wet, muffled noise came from my mouth as I shoved my face into my dad's jacket."Sweetie, you're being silly. It's not real."

I slammed my fist into his side weakly as a new batch of tears burst from my eyes. He sighed."Honey, just let it go, alright?" My mom pestered him as she struggled to keep hold of my squirming baby brother. "She doesn't have to see it if she doesn't want to!"

"But she's making a scene." Dad tried to pull me off of him, but I just tightened my grip on his jacket.

"You'd be making a scene too if you'd just been trapped in a closet for thirty minutes!"My dad sighed again.

Mom grabbed my hand and yanked me off of him, as I kept sobbing uncontrollably. She took me outside and put my brother into his car seat. I still couldn't stop crying but, to my mother's relief, I had finally ceased my screaming.

"Arial... please..." she begged, "Whatever it was, it was just pretend..."

I couldn't talk. Talking would make it worse.

"Those things can't hurt you now..."

She hadn't been there. She hadn't seen what I had seen.

In the darkness of that closet, I had seen something. I distinctly remember its mangled smile, looking down on me with some kind of twisted joy. I forced myself to think other thoughts, but in the end they kept wandering back to that horrible, otherworldly sound.

"ARIAL"

~*~

Days went by, but I just couldn't forget about that creature. Despite being horribly repulsed by the form I had seen, and despite the fact that a five year old can't stay focused on much for very long, I was also intrigued. Who- or what- was it anyway? If only I wasn't so terrified of it, I would have described every detail.

It was truly the stuff of nightmares.

I turned a page of my book as I tried to focus on the story instead.

"Hey."

I looked up from my book to see a boy about my age sitting next to me. His face was covered in dirt and mud. How long had he been there? I wondered.

"What're you doing?" he leaned in close, his messy black hair getting in my face.

I glared at him. "Nothing."

He moved in closer and pointed at my book with grubby fingers. "Doesn't seem like nothing to me." he smiled widely. "What's it about?"

I scooted away from him. "It's... well..." I paused, unable to take it anymore. "Why are you covered in mud?"

He held up his hands happily. "I saw a worm in the dirt. I wanted to see it up close." he brushed his hands onto his pants. "Guess I made a mess..."

Even though he was being so rude, I just couldn't hate him for almost making me dirty. He was funny. I liked that.

"What's it about?" he repeated, changing the subject.

The book had lain forgotten on my lap, and my place on the page was forgotten as well. I struggled to form a reply. "W-well... if I told you... it'd spoil it..."

He laughed a bit. "Just tell me what happens. I wanna know!"

"Read it yourself then."

"I don't have time to read it, just tell me now."

Irritating as he was, I liked him. He seemed nice. Obnoxious, but nice.

"I can't tell you, but you know what I can tell you?" I smirked.

"What?" he asked innocently.

"My name." I smiled, "It's Arial."

He smirked. "That's a pretty name."

After that it was dead silence.

"Um..." I started, "... and your name...?"

"It's embarrassing." he said sharply, moving his body away from me.

Putting my book back into my bag, I leaned towards him, trying to get a look at his face. "I said mine." I said, using childish blackmail against him.

Looking away from me, he bit his lip, thinking about what to do. In the end, he moved towards my ear and whispered: "Wingdings..."

Bewildered, I stared in disbelief. "THAT'S your name?"

His face was downcast, casting a gloom over him that wasn't present before. "I knew you'd think it was funny." he mumbled.

"N-no!" I cried. "It's just... different..." I stood up and walked in front of him. "MY name isn't normal either! Most girls I know are Abby or Mary or something..." I trailed off a bit, "But my name's... cool! A-and YOUR name is cool!"

Something seemed to click inside of him, and inside of me too. We looked at each other and didn't say anything. I waited for a response. Did I mess up?

Finally, I noticed that he was tearing up a bit, his smile genuine and warm.

"Thank you... Nobody's ever..."

He stood up and hugged me suddenly. I didn't have time to think. Once I started to think about it, I wanted him off. My dress was getting muddy, and he smelled of soil and sweat...

But...

The school bell rang, signalling the end of recess and the beginning of more work. He broke off of me and rushed towards the school doors, leaving me there shocked and confused.

When I came to my senses, I picked up my bag and followed everyone to class.

"Wingdings, huh?"
