The most beautiful thing in the world is right outside my door, but the reason it is outside my door is all my fault. It slowly breaks down the door and all I can do is listen; knock, crack. With each one the door becomes weaker and worn.
Over and over it goes until I can no longer take it. I begin searching for a way out, the continous knock, crack eating at me from the inside as a caterpiller to a leaf. I search throughout the house, slowly making my way upstairs, family pictures hung crooked on the walls. I find the attic door, using all my strength I push the door open and burst into the dim attic, the only source of light was a faint stream of white light coming from the window.
Boxes stack up all around me in uneven, messy piles, random items spill from the tops and litter the floor. I go to the window which over looks the roof overhang. I pull myself outside, pushed my golden brown hair out of the way and look at the otherside of the door for the first time in ages.
Everything that was once alive and vibrant was now dead, instead of real beauty, an imposter of beauty stood on the door step, indeed looking like the most beautiful thing in the world. Rain fell around me, the sky dark and ground soggy. The creature imposing as beautiful and alive was shrouded in shadows and fog, offsetting it beauty and reveling its true nature which allowed me to see it was indeed not true beauty.
You see, the creature used to look like the most amazing and beautiful thing in the world when I first came across it.
It had been about five months ago, I, Kate Asher was your average and generic 17 year old good girl, I got good grades, helped out at home and had a few close friends. Yet even that couldn't help me in the end, don't ask me exactly what happened but one day something happened, rumors led to fights that led to falling out with my friends. I fell in with the wrong crowd and this led to them taking me to my first party.
I hated every minute of it, until someone showed me an escape. I refused at first but then, in a moment of weakness and curiosity I tried the escape and thats when I saw the creature for the first time, it was beautiful, it reprsented fun and a way to escape from stress. What I didn't realise was that I had stared something I couldn't stop by myself.
Later that night, for the first time ever I found myself sneaking back into my room, lightheaded and giddy I stumbled to my bed only stopping to get changed, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and was saw that my pupils were so wide you could only see half the amount of my blue iris's and they held a crazed expression in them. My phone had 30 missed calls from my old friends but I just ignored them and went to bed, now I wish I had rang back, I would give anything to talk to my old friends again.
Over the next few days I got more and more desperate to go back to the beautiful creature, so I went back to the group and quickly got into the habit of using that beautiful escape, everytime I went a few days without I grew worse, feeling sick and empty. A couple of months later and I was addicted to that feeling of freedom and happiness, the need to see the creature took over me.
My parents grew worried about my increasingly distant behavoiur and the crowds I called my friends. They tried asking my old friends about it but they were also in the dark, eventually my parents took me to the doctor who put it down to depression and anxiety which confused my parents as I had had a good life.
Soon enough paranoia, irrational fear, insomnia and terrible nightmares followed, leaving me exhausted and even more run down. By the fourth month, around the time of the nightmares, I began realizing that the creature was not good and in fact I had invited my own internal demons to surface.
The creature, once a becon of fun and freedom, represented fear and anxiety. What once looked as beautiful as an angel now looked like the devil himself.
I fought against the need, fought my demons but it was to late and my attempts were futile. I realized there was no escape, which brings me to tonight as I'm scrambling up the slick, wet roof tiles trying desperatly to keep a grip and not plummet to into the dark, shadows that rolled over the soaking ground. As I slide down the other side, trying to stay as quiet as possible as I feel the wet tiles move under me, lightning flashes above me and thunder booms.
As I approach the edge of the roof, I grab onto a tile just as my legs go over, I lie there desperatly clinging to what I realise is a rather lose tile and suddenly have an overwhelming urge to give up, tears prick my eyes as I think of everyone I had hurt and everything hurt as I lay there.
Without warning, the tile I had been clinging to breaks free and I'm falling towards the shadowy ground. I land and am surprised to find myself not injured, looking around I see a brilliant white light breaking free of the shadows at the end of the street and I feel an urge to go there. I begin walking towards it hoping and praying the creature doesn't see me, and as I'm walking down the street I realise just how run down it is.
A deathly silence fills the air, the whole street looked dead and dark, I shiver as the raindrops run down the back of my neck like icy fingers, my t-shirt was soaked and I had to keep pushing my long, wet hair out of my face. I was suddenly aware of the fact that the creature was following me and getting closer and closer. I knew I had to try and beat it, but it was powerful and dangerous than ever. My mind swam with random thoughts and memories, voices rose and fell and I felt like I was going crazy.
I ran faster, panic and fear coursing through me, I was struggling to breath, limb growing sore but I could feel the creature behind me, I could feel its breath on my neck cold as ice and death.
I'm stumbling now, heart beat uneven and gasping painfully for air, now my mind was fixed on one thing, reaching the light before the creature got me. Finally I reached the light, the blinding white light stinging my eyes, it held a sense of finality to it, an escape from the creature and all the pain, but I was sick of always escaping. I didn't want to die wether its because of the creature or not, I want my old life back I want my family and friends back. Sobs build up in my throat, it wasn't fair, I want to live. A overwhelming need to live runs through me and seemingly out of no where a third option appeared, a golden door.
I look around, at the creature with its claws about to dig into me, the white light and the golden door. Curiosity had caused this all, a saying ran through my head, Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back. I knew that I wouldn't let my curiosity kill me, with this in mind I turn away from the white light, step towards the door and away from the creature.
I reached the door and heard wispers coming from it. Determind to live, I reach out and twist the door handle. The most beautiful thing in the world is right outside my door, and as I step through that door, leaving all the darkness behind, I find its life.

A/N:
Hey guys sorry it was a bit of a downer,
the main reason I did this story was to bring awarness to how easy it is to fall into a drug habit, this is a serious issue that many ignore. I actually used an exam prompt to do this story, it gave me the idea.
If you have any ideas for a short story, like a prompt etc. comment it and I will try to do it.
