The sleek black McLaren MP4-12C drove down the wooded road. Alice thanked god for packs with pavement rather than gravel. It may be that gravel was less noticeable and less often confused for a public road, but she loved her baby to death and hated the danger of dents or scratches. She finally came to the security checkpoint. It wasn't some official looking road block with a striped reflective bar blocking the path. This was quite different. She slowed and pulled up next to the matte black Range Rover. She rolled down her window as the other driver did the same.
"Good evening Miss Delivié. How was the drive?" The young man in the drivers seat gave her a barely there smile and proceeded to reach his hand out the window, which she met with her own, for a handshake.
She offered a sad smile of her own and said, "The woods are quite beautiful here. Early fall really transforms a place doesn't it? Here are my papers." She handed him her credentials which were sitting on the passengers seat.
He nodded. "You're good to go, they're expecting you." With that they both rolled up their windows putting a barrier between them and the brisk evening. She drove on through the ever darkening forest. It should be Ty here not her she thought. She saw flashes of glowing eyes and blurs of fur moving through the forest in her peripheral vision.
She could already feel her anxiety rising. Tyrone wouldn't get nervous that he would say the wrong thing or not be able to control his temper. Alice put on a good game face and it appeared she had convinced many people of her skills as a negotiator, but she was never good with just casual inquires. She had a habit of making people feel like she didn't trust them or they were in trouble. If someone was crying she knew how to find out what was wrong but not how to make them feel better. If she was dealing with a hostile situation she could calm people down in order to survive.
It seemed simple enough. She just needed the Alphas signature on the new treaty in order to replace the expired one. Though, Alice's greatest weakness was what to do when people were lying or holding back information. Now, it was not that she did not have an ability to tell if someone was lying. Quite the contrary actually, she could read people like open books. Though, she never knew how to handle the situation. People lie for a reason. Who was she to pry out something someone obviously deemed destructive?
That was what made this trip so difficult. The Crimson Moon pack was going to lie to her, as they had been lying to every pack in the continent for months. The thing that left Alice and her family puzzled though, was that usually the pack did so on paper. Any pack which had tried to contact Crimson Moon for anything regarding anything from a meeting, visit, or just general curiosity or concern had been sent a letter saying Alpha Heartt was unavailable and everything was fine. It came as a shock to her father when they accepted their request for a meeting. They were reaching out. Extending the olive branch and the only person available to go was Alice, the packs strong arm negotiator. Nothing about this was ideal.
Alice saw the lights of the pack house in the distance and the paved road turned into a brick driveway which came around to the front of the mansion. Waiting outside the door were three built young men. They all wore dress pants and dress shirts, though, as she got closer she noticed none of them really seemed put together. None of them held good posture, or bothered to iron their shirts. She pulled up, took a deep breath, and got out of the car making sure to grab her purse which contained the documents. Another gentleman she hadn't seen rushed up to help her out of the car and take her keys for valet. One of the three men stepped forward and opened the trunk and took out her suitcase.
"Oh, there's no need I can take it myself." She protested, her fierce independence itching to use a sharper tone.
"No, I insist. I'll have it taken up to your room immediately." He reached out a hand for her to shake. She firmly took his hand and gave a curt smile and nod.
"I'm James Malcavoy, it's a pleasure to meet you Miss. Delivié." His smile didn't reach his eyes nor did they convey any pleasure. He seemed in pain and trying to hide it. Her brows pulled together in concern. As she had noticed before he was well dressed, but there was something off, maybe halfhearted about it. He was not cleanly shaven, nor did he smell recently showered. It was customary for a pack to put their best foot forward for guests to demonstrate the state of the pack individually and as a whole.
The other two men met her at the bottom of the stairs. One looked shy and wouldn't meet her eyes. He introduced himself as Daran Wellman, and the other watched her closely with an almost critical eye. Though, they both had the same pained look.
"The name's Gage," the tall imposing one said as he looked her up and down. "Gage Anderson, third in command. I apologize the Beta isn't here. There was a disturbance on the northern boarder. We've been anticipating your arrival all week Miss Delivié. It's great to finally have you here."
Shaking his hand, "As have I Mr. Anderson." She chose to not inquire after the Alpha, things were tense enough as it was. A chill ran through her as a cold breeze blew past. It was dark out and the brisk fall air seeped through her sweater.
The shy one, James, took notice of her discomfort and gestured up the stairs and said, "Shall we? You've probably had a long drive and it's late. I'm sure we can conduct business in the morning once everyone is rested." They walked up the stairs and Gage opened the door.
Alice's whole world tipped on its axis. It was as if the earth had just stopped spinning and she was left trying to regain her spacial awareness. She faintly heard James saying in the background, "have you had anything to eat? I'm sure we can have something made for you if not?" Upon noticing her state he asked while putting a hand on her arm, concern lacing his words, "are you alright Miss. Delivié? Alice? Miss. Delivié? Can you hear me?"
"Mine."
