The stars in the sky looked dim in the deep velvety black that surrounded them. Down in the gorge, a she-cat stood with her only kit, licking him protectively. She was surrounded by angry cats who hissed and scraped their claws along the ground waiting for the decision of her fate.
Anxious muttering stopped abruptly when a proud grey tom stalked out of a cave. A bewildered tabby followed him, casting occasional, uncertain glances at his leader. The grey tom, Ashstar, was on his eighth life and, despite muscles ripple beneath his fur like rocks, old age had flecked his muzzle grey and tightened his joints stiff and sore.
He climbed onto an overhanging ledge to speak with his cats.
"Cats of SkyClan, Softwing has broken the medicine cat code with the delivery of this kit,"
"Drive her away!" Screeched one cat.
"Kill her!" Hissed another
"Silence!" Commanded Ashstar.
Even the Warriors knew better that to argue with their leader, but, the small voice of the tabby deputy spoke up.
"Surely you should have mercy on this tiny kit. My sister did not mean for any of this, but, this kit has been born."
"Drive the pair of them away!"
"SkyClan needs loyal blood!"
"Silence!"
Again, all cats fell quiet to their leader's commanding tone.
"Softwing has made a grave mistake in having this kit so she must be punished, but, though the kit is yong and weak, with training he will make a fine warrior. Softwing,"
Ashstar turned towards the protective medicine cat.
"SkyClan will keep the kit however I can't account for your actions so I must ask you to leave. Lightningkit will be well looked after but the Clan members feel your wounds of disloyalty too deeply. Farewell Softwing."
Softwing opened her mouth to protest but Ashstar dismissed it with a flick of his tail. The tabby came over. "It will be safer if he stays and he will make a fine warrior, I'll make sure of it."
Softwing looked into the pools of sadness that were her sister's eyes and realised she was right; a kit this young would die from traveling. Besides, Softwing no longer felt worthy of raising this cat when she couldn't even stay loyal to her clan.
She licked him on the head and vowed silently that they would meet again.
