Chapter 1: Introduction
Small, gentle fingers brushed over the strings of an old, scratched up guitar with nothing but ease, a soft melody emitting from the calming action taking place. To Castiel Novak, nothing felt better than playing the guitar, there was just something so soothing about creating a sound from such a simple mechanism that just caused his heart to skip a beat or a special twinkle to appear in his ocean blue eyes.
That certain twinkle echoed in the teenagers clear blue orbs now, the smallest of smiles twitching at the corner of his thin lips with complete content as a soft tune played out. He wasn't playing any select note, just allowing his fingertips to create the magic like they had a mind of their own. Though, he supposed they did.
Castiels apparent trance, however, was rudely broken as a door slammed open in the empty classroom the teen had located himself to. As in strolled the one and only Dean Winchester. Blonde haired, green eyed, tanned and muscular Dean Winchester. Castiels best, and only friend in other words.
A guitar was slung over Deans shoulder as he stepped into the classroom, his signature smirk covering his features and his eyes softening upon glancing at the blue eyed beauty. The dark haired boy nodding out a greeting as he looked back down at his guitar in silence.
Dean pulled out a chair and took a seat beside him, swinging his guitar around his shoulder and angling it onto his lap, as he straightened out the piece of wood.
"No hello, then?" Dean's deep masculine voice spoke out through the sudden silence, blinking down at the blue eyed boy with a soft grin. Castiels head lifted to meet his gaze, a soft huff emitting from his smiling lips.
"With such a loud entrance like that, what's the point?" Castiels softer tone responded cheekily as he straightened up, wincing slightly as he felt a dull ache in his neck.
Dean released a soft snicker, shaking his head. "You know you could get into trouble for being that sarcastic." He teased, brushing his thumb along the chords of his own guitar.
"Sarcasm is my only defence when it comes to you, Dean." Castiel retorted with a breathy laugh, giving a playful wink before looking back down at his fingers. He didn't notice how Deans eyes had widened just slightly at the completely normal action, well, it was normal to him, anyways. To Dean.. Not so much.
Dean couldn't exactly remember when he started liking the boy, between the cheerful laughs, jokes and long music lessons, he knew the factor merged in with all those memories somehow. The fact that Castiel had never shown any interest in guys did just so happen to put the Winchester off though; But to be fair, Dean hadn't made his sexual orientation that obvious either. It was just something they had never really discussed, people didn't exactly go up to their friends and outright ask if they were gay.. right?
It took Dean a moment, but he finally gathered up enough oxygen in the clustered room to speak.
"So Cas, you like anybody?"
The statement was blunt, and mixed with curiosity. But Dean prayed that Castiel wouldn't find the question suspicious, or too demanding. He didn't want to seem like that friend that just needed to know everything about the other person. Nobody liked that.
Though Castiel didn't even blink as the words hovered in the empty space between them. It was a random sentence, but the factor didn't worry him, he didn't like anybody, not that there was anybody in this school to like; he wasn't the most popular teen, so to speak. Thus when the murmured "Nah" escaped the younger boys lips, the simple reply didn't phase him. "And you?"
To Dean, Castiels response filled him with both relief and sadness. The kid did not like anybody, but he also didn't like HIM. The male was so caught up his thoughts that he didn't even hear the question stated afterwards, until it was repeated, as ocean infused eyes that reminded him of a clear blue sky on a perfect day, locked onto him.
"Me? Well uh- there may be someone." Dean could only mutter sheepishly, bringing up a hand to rub the back of his neck anxiously. His brain edged him to carry on the sentence with an It's YOU but he knew that just would not work out how he had dreamed of the scene many times before.
Castiels raised eyebrow, however, caused some other information to tumble from Deans lips.
"Just some guy."
To say Castiel was shocked when the word guy escaped the teenagers lips was an understatement by far. He could never of assumed Dean liked boys, even if he liked both genders, he would of thought he was as straight as a pole. A crooked pole now, perhaps. Luckily, Castiel was not hateful towards Deans confession in the slightest. He was his best friend, for crying out loud. He would support him in anything he did or chose, and he knew that would never change, or so he hoped.
"You like boys?" Castiel couldn't help but ask, it did sound a little rude perhaps, but the kid was in shock. Dean was always hanging out with cheerleaders, and girls would always look his way in the hall, but he liked guys.
Dean just mustered up a nod, avoiding the surprised gaze of the dark haired male, who just gave a small smile in his direction after a moment. The two teenagers looked back down at their guitars, the conversation swept away by the smooth strokes of their fingertips.
Their practise was cut off, however, by the shrill ringing of the school bell. Dean gave an over dramatic sigh, smiling and swivelling his guitar over his shoulder as he stood up and gave the younger male a hand up. He had only just arrived, but they did just so happen to have the next class together.
"Thanks." Castiel murmured, kneeling down to slide his guitar into the overused case, which was in no better condition than the instrument itself. Anybody could tell it was well used, and many years loved. The worn leather decorated with random stickers he had come across over time, and the few tears and scrapes, gave the effect in an aesthetic kind of way.
Standing up, side by side, the two teens headed out of the abandoned music room and merged into the crowded hallway. It was by chance that they actually managed to stay anywhere near each other, by the amount of students pushing and shoving along the locker lined hall.
"So, I was thinking." Dean yelled out amongst the endless chatter, Castiel bringing his soft gaze to the taller males in curiosity. It looked almost like the older boy was nervous, regardless of the fact that to Castiel, he had no reason to be. Dean spotted the pair of eyes on him and continued with his request.
"Do you wanna come hang out with me at the fair, by any chance?"
Castiels whole face seemed to light up at the suggestion. He hadn't planned on going, even though it did seem to be all everybody was talking about. But now he did have a reason, and it had been a while since him and Dean had caught up outside of school. The event was only 2 days away.
The shorter male nodded eagerly with an excited grin, which seemed to make Deans tough heart almost melt at the amount of adorableness his crush could muster without even trying. He found himself staring for a moment, though Castiel didn't realise as the two of them came to a halt at their lockers.
The two pale blue lockers were beside each other, each in a scraped up condition well in need of a paint job. It reminded the teenagers of how they met, in the very spot they were now standing. How their guitar cases had bumped into each other and sent Castiels instrument to come tumbling out of its protective burrow. He couldn't help that the clasps were rusted and snapped open at the contact, but the fact that he met Dean because of it made him glad he hadn't replaced the pieces of metal until after they had met. The memory faded into the kids minds as they snapped open their selected lockers and grabbed all the things they would need for their next class.
Castiels thoughts were of course on their next class, being the smarty pants he was. But Deans mind was far from there. It was all the way with the glowing lights, laughs and romantic scenery that would be the fair; With the boy he might as well be in love with, at his side.
