Pounding on my door woke me up on an early Monday morning. I groan at the sound and attempt to fall back asleep blocking out all sounds other than the birds singing to each other. A sigh comes from the other side of the door before the door started rattling again.
"Calli, wake up before I go in there and wake you up myself," my mother threatened. Is she actually sober this morning?
"I'm up I'm up!" I quickly say, frighted at the thought of my mother angry. Swinging my legs over the side of my bed and stretching my aching back. Why did the weekend go by so quickly? Doesn't the universe hate me enough? I mumble five more days repeatedly as I begin my routine to make myself seem decent until the words of others can destroy the small glimmer of hope I have left. Crap my car is in the shop. Great, guess I'm walking
When I finally walk up the steps to the school the minute hand is almost at 7:30. That's means I have about 15 minutes to find my locker and ready for 7 hours of hell. I used to enjoy school, even math and English. Now it is all different, the people have changed and the more materialistic. you are the more friends you have the more popular you are. Lost in my thoughts, I didn't realize that I am at my locker. Spinning the dials, slamming doors and chatter surround me confining me to my silent bubble. Lowering my head, not willing myself to be seen, I walk to the only place where I can truly be myself, the hallway between the auditorium and the drama room. Picking up my headphones I enter the world of music joined by my favorite people, the ones who keep me going everyday. My head is filled with piano notes as Truce by Twenty Øne Pilots is played. I enter a different world where the voices in my head comfort me instead of hurt me, where the students attending my school never hurt me, and mainly I never hurt myself. Most days I feel like I'm my only friend but that is mostly because I don't trust anyone anymore.
There was a point where I had three best friends and told them all my secrets but they betrayed me and spread them around school, ruining my life and making me all around miserable. The ringing bell got my walking into my first class where I will be teased and pinched, poked and prodded, my hair pulled until I cry out. The teachers don't care, they look away, even when they see me being harassed. I leave my first period tired and feeling worthless. My mind began to believe the fact that I was meant to be alone, that my father disappeared for a reason and my mother turns to alcohol to solve her problems. These thoughts drive me to end the pain and suffering. Who would care? My bullies would lose a punching bag so they would find another one. My mother would lose a daughter but she never truly cared and I have no father. The only thing that would be lost would be my scholarship but even that I don't have for sure. I have to push forward and prove that I can handle the pain but it's hard extremely hard.
After school, I finally get the call from the mechanic's saying that my car was ready to be picked up. As I walk paper is thrown at me and names were shouted at me but I was used to it. One day they will run out of names, their punches will get weak and paper won't be produced. I dream of that day but it isn't coming anytime soon. Walking in the door, cold air is pushed out of the AC causing my hair to fly into my face, the attendant at the main desk hands me my keys and points to where my car is. "Thank you for this five star service" I say with sarcasm dripping in my venomous tone. Turning and walking out the door to find my car without a car radio. "Of all things to steal its my car radio?" I mumble under my breath. Driving back home is like driving into the unexpected, I don't know what I will com home to sometimes.Without my car radio my mind ventures into the thoughts I don't want to think about and reflects on the choices I've made over time. Sometimes the quiet is so violent that the scars that have healed reopen and sting and the fresh cuts sting even more as my mind goes into the darker choices and makes me want to pull the steering wheel.
