Lilly didn't know what to think about the red-head in front of her. She wanted to be angry with her. She wanted to find a flaw with her. Anything to make her feel better. She quickly shook those thoughts away this girl had not known. She is not at fault he is. It didn't take Avery long to realize why he had targeted her, besides the fact she had no idea about Lilly and him being a thing, the two girls looked a lot alike. They could pass as sisters. With that thought, the wheels in her head started turning. She was going to make the bastard pay.
"Lily?" she said softly
"hmm?" The petite girl looked up her wide eyes brimming with hurt.
"I have an idea. I don't know if you would be down for it, though."
"I-I want to make him suffer like I have. I'm willing to do what it takes."
"Well then, follow me and I'll show you our first step."
Lilly nodded and quickly the girls were off headed down a path no one was prepared for.
When Lilly arrived at the normal house she was drained. Not physically but emotionally. She wanted to sleep. Putting aside her wants she got out of the car and followed the wave of red to the front door. She offered an awkward smile and stepped into the modern house.
"So uhm this is my place" Avery spoke softly as though Lilly was a scared animal.
"It's nice. Do you live here alone?" Lilly spoke becoming adjusted to Avery.
"No, I live with my brother. He'll be home pretty soon"
"Ok. So what's the plan?"
"We'll get to that. Let's get to know each other."
"Oh ok. What do you want to know?"
"Are you ok?"
At the question and the care in Avery's voice, Lilly almost burst into tears. Almost.
"I will be once we begin the plan"
"We have time, the better we know each other the more prepared we'll be"
Avery's logic didn't make much sense to Lily but she accepted it non-the-less.
"Why do you live alone?" Lily questioned, she was normally a very curious person his betrayal only dulled it a bit.
Avery shifted uncomfortably, "My parents travel a lot for work, they don't have much time for us. My brother practically raised me."
Lily nodded, "What's your brother like?"
"He's hard working and a complete goof but he's a good guy, he means well," Avery paused, "What's your family like?"
"Well my dad died when I was 10, my mom had just found out she was pregnant with my brother Devon. She's tried dating but no one can come close to the love she once had." Lily looked down her hair falling into her face.
"How did- how did he die?" Avery hesitated before asking.
"He was on his way home from work he was an environmentalist lawyer, you know fighting the oil companies, well a drunk driver was coming home too, he swerved into my dad. They rushed him to the hospital and did everything they could but he was lost. The drunk lived." Lily sat on the plush couch, leaned back, and closed her eyes.
"What happened to him?"
"He served his time. I hated him he took my dad away, the man I thought was invincible. My mom, the day the guy got out of jail, invited him to dinner with us. I was shocked 8 years old me felt betrayed. The guy came, he kept apologizing my mom kept forgiving him. He left but swore he'd make it up to us, he came from a pretty well off family so every month we get the amount of money my dad would've made in the form of a check, his way of making it up to us. When I asked my mom why she said 'Holding a grudge doesn't make you stronger; it makes you bitter. Forgiving doesn't make you weak; it sets you free'"
"Wow"
"Yeah" Lily gave a nervous chuckle before clearing her throat.
"That's tough man" Avery looked at Lily with a new found admiration, this girl had been through so much and yet she was able to keep going.
"So uhm the plan?" She looked around awkwardly.
"Right so the idea is that we need to make you as attractive as possible. How far are you willing to go?"
"As far as we need."
"Then we need to go to the store, you're about to get a full on make over."
The two girls sat in Avery's car, the silence surrounded them like walls. Avery ran in the store and Lily was left alone with her thought; something quite dangerous given the circumstances.
What was she doing? There's no way she's going to be able to pull anything off, she's too soft hearted.
Her thoughts were halted as Avery got back in with two bags. As they drove back Avery turned on some music.
I get knocked down
Both girls cracked a smile, such an odd song but oh how fitting.
No, you're never gonna get me down
No, you won't get me down Jackson, Lilly thought as the trees blurred past them, watch out Jackson you have no idea what's coming for you.
