The rest of middle school was horrible. Now that Bianca's gone, Melissa has gotten worse. Now, she intentionally hurts me, even if she isn't drunk. I have the scars to prove it.
Since I got kicked out of my old school, Melissa enrolled me into Goode High School. It was a pretty good school from what I saw on the brochure. They had cool technology, the kids were said to be nice, and the food had good reviews. It was also full of kids who had things like ADHD and dyslexia, just like me. The thing that attracted me most, however, was that they had a mythology class. I have always been obsessed with Greek myths, don't ask me why. I think it started when I used to play this card game called Mythomagic. It's stupid, really. I don't play anymore.
I drag myself out of bed. I got up kind of early, so I wouldn't have to rush. I take a quick shower, and throw on black jeans, an Imagine Dragons t-shirt, and my black Doc Martens. I brush my teeth, but don't bother to do anything to my hair. There's no one I'm hoping to impress.
I stomp downstairs, dreading what awaits me. I attempt to sneak an apple and go out the front door, but I'm too late.
She's there.
Melissa sits at the table, her face full of rage.
"Nico?" she says in a calm, yet furious voice.
"Yes, M-Melissa?" I stammer.
"I thought I told you to have this kitchen clean by the time I got home tonight," she said, her voice still wavering with anger.
"Well, first, you didn't. Second, it's morning. Third, Melissa, I think it's time for you to rest," I said, pointing at the empty bottle in her hand.
"Excuse me? Was that sass, YOU LITTLE TWERP!?"
I sigh. Might as well get it over with.
"Okay, Melissa, I think you should lie do-"
She slaps me, hard. I lose my balance and fall. She kicks me in the chest with her spiky heeled stilettos. I hear a crack.
She goes in for a punch, but I manage to move out of the way. Soon, she tires herself out.
"Alri-alright you little swine, that shou-that should teach you some respect," she said, out of breath.
I slowly get up.
Okay, Nico. Minor setback. But you are NOT letting it get in the way.
I go back to my room to nurse the mark on my face, and hopefully, find out what that cracking sound might've been.
-----------------------
About an hour later, I'm standing outside of a large building. A bunch of kids stream through the doors, and right then and there I made a mental note to myself:
Okay, rules of the road:
-Pay attention to details.
-Do not draw attention.
-Do not engage in conversation.
-Don't die.
I give myself these rules every first day of school, even though I know they aren't gonna last. I finally scratch them from my mind and decide to try being nice for once. But the "don't die" rule still stands.
I walk up the stairs and into the doors of the school. I'm immediately taken aback by how big the place is. I turn into the main office.
A lady with short, neat brown hair and a stuck up nose is sitting at the front desk staring at a computer screen. Her name tag says "Ms. Lackey".
