Nat pov:
No one really knows what happened that day. Every thing was fine, a beautiful morning, people walking up and down the town streets getting their vegetables and fruits from the orchard stands. I walked by the bakery and saw two people inside with their kids running around trying all the new samples. " Hi Mr. And Mrs. Mellark!" I yelled. The man turned around. He was a very handsome man if I say so myself. A beautiful smile, short blonde hair, and not tall at all. Just perfect! If he was my age of course. I'm 7 years younger than him, but only a centimeter shorter than him. "Hi Natalie!" He said. He turned around, grabbed a loaf of bread I had ordered yesterday, and tossed it to me. I thanked him then ran off. I jumped the fence that separates the town from the forest. People from panem weren't really supposed to go out in the forest with all the wild creatures. Any thing could happen out here. But I broke the rules. A lot. I ran up to the fallen tree trunk and reached inside. I pulled out my bow and quiver full of arrows. I slowly walked into the forest, keeping an eye out for danger. There's lot of bears here in panem. I walked through the trees and bushes into a small patch of grass and dandelions. I came here every morning and met up with my best friend. Katie Hawthorne. We had known each other since we were both only 6 years old. She usually got here before me and would climb the tree up to our tree fort we had built. It was made of deep oak wood that blended in with the trees behind it. "Katie, I'm here" I yelled up. No answer. "Katie?" I started climbing up wondering why she wasn't running to the small gap in the floor to peak down at me. I entered the small fort, and stood up looking around. "Katie are you in here?" Again, no answer. Where was she, why wasn't she here to greet me. Some thing was wrong. "Natalie? Are you here yet?" I heard her call. I scrambled over to the gap and looked Down. "I'm up here kat." I heard her crawl quickly up the tree and into the fort. " Took u a long time to get here. Did ur butter knife get stuck on the fence?" I asked sarcastically. " Oh, whoops. I may have forgot the knife...and the butter." I looked at her in disbelief. "Katie?! How could you forget the butter??! You know this is the most important day of the year!" Today would have been the reaping for the hunger games, but Katniss Everdeen/Mellark, otherwise known as the Mockingjay, put a stop to it. " Sorry Nat, I had a busy morning. These men came to our door and handed us a bunch of flowers and stuff. It was weird." Katie had a confused look on her face as if she was trying to figure something out. " wait, men? Gave u guys flowers? Why?" I asked. "We weren't really sure. They were wearing these white armored suits with masks and stuff." She seemed kind of scared. We sat there in silence thinking about it. "Wait, white armored suits? Like the ones the capital guards wore when Katniss was in the hunger games??!" I started thinking about this. Katie looked up at me with a really scared look on her face. I looked up at her, the same amount of fear showing throughout my whole body. " OH NO" We stood up and scrambled down the tree. We ran together through the forest and over the fence to the town. We could hear sirens in the distance. Smoke filled the air, making us cough. We ran through the city, holding hands tightly, so we wouldn't be separated. Then we saw it. Or what was remained of it. Katies home...in peices. Some on fire. Her family including her mom, dad, and younger adopted brother, were being loaded on to the ambulance by stretchers. "Mom! Dad!" I heard Katie yell and scream, a choke in her throat told me she was crying. The smoke was getting stronger. I could barely keep my eyes open. My head was spinning. Then everything became black. And I fell to the ground.
