Beatrice had been walking home slowly that fateful day, taking in the sights that laid before her.

She was in her neighborhood. It wasn't the safest and couldn't be considered the cleanest but it was home and she loved it.

Beatrice plastered what she hoped was a friendly smile on her face as she passed familiar faces, sometimes stopping to chat.

She kicked a stray rock with her worn-out school shoe, mentally taking note to have her dear Granny buy her a new pair as she looked down at them.

Lifting her head at the sound of dogs barking, she chuckled when she saw dogs chasing kids, or the other way around. She didn't know who was more scared.

Mothers were calling out to their children. It was almost time for supper. A sad smile fell touched her lips when she thought of her own mother who would call out to her.
