"You need to stay here, Angelina. Do you understand?"
She nodded her head quickly so I closed the door and left to sit at the top of the stairs, ready to step in at any time. Mom had always told me she could handle herself but there was no way I could have believed her when there was always some kind of bruise on her at all times.
I am didn't understand why he was like that. Or why she stayed. I wanted us to leave him but what am I to do? She had made me and Angelina promise never to tell. She always said she could handle herself.
I wonder what would have happened if I hadn't listened sooner. Would she still be here?
