Free-write Story One
Christmas edition.
It was a dark and cloudy afternoon that Christmas and Kayla was seated on the window seat in her room, staring out into the countryside covered with rolling hills of snow. Her family seemed to be having a lot of fun as they pushed each other around, had snowball fights and rolled around in the snow making snow angels.
There were eight of them in the family - extended excluded, of course. Her mom, her dad, her five siblings, and herself. They probably hadn't even noticed she wasn't there - no one ever did. She sat down quietly in the corner during family gatherings. She sat in the back corner of the mini van every time they went out as a family. She liked it sometimes - being quiet and observing undisturbed, but most of the time, like now, she wished with all her might that when she was absent, her presence would be missed a lot more often, like her sister, Gwen, who was loud and fun and outgoing and a joy to be around with, but was only home during the holidays because of college.
Maybe if she went away to college things would change for her. Maybe mom would call her everyday like she does to Gwen. Or better still she could run away to get even more attention. They would definitely get so worried and send the police after her and put up posters of her all round the forest and even in the city! They would wish they never ignored her. They would wish they paid more attention to her. Her parents would wish they never always forgot to tuck her in bed like they did for her other siblings.
Maybe she could even do something irrational, like attempting suicide or making herself sick on purpose so that she could have lots of balloons and cards and lot of people visit her in her ward at the hospital everyday. That way even, her parents would spend a lot of money on her like they do to all her siblings. That's killing two birds with a single stone. She could even commit suicide on her birthday which was in a few days; that way, everyone would remember her till they died, and never once forget her birthday! That sounded like a plan!
But killing one's self hurts, doesn't it? Sigh, maybe something else.
She could even get their attention right now. She threw open her window with a loud crash against the exterior wall of the building and screamed at the very top of her lungs. Her first scream in years. Everyone stopped what they were doing at once and heads whipped in her direction and eyes grew wide.
A wide smile broke across ten year old Kayla's face, and a huge tear rolled down her cold cheek.
