I watched as the trees moved quickly across the rare flat land in New York. I sat comfortably in the front seat of Jane's car as she speed through the back roads. My head softly nodded to the beat of One Direction as there song Perfect blasted through my earbuds. I felt my phone buzz in my hand and I looked down to see a simple Twitter notification. I ignored it, along with all the other ones I had no interest in.
I let out a sigh and murmured the lyrics. Jane's voice slowly started to over lap my music, causing my to turn it down slightly. "I think you will like it here. The family has been dying for a daughter ever since their, uh..." She paused in search of the right word, trying to not sound insulting. "incident." She finished, smiling to herself in satisfaction. I just nodded and resumed playing my music, trying to tone out her attempts at small talk.
This makes my fourth family of the year. It was only mid July, which broke my record. The other families seemed to have a problem with my "attitude" or how "ornery" I always was. The truth is, I am just tired. Tired of moving from one place to another. Tired of not being able to settle down. Tired of being abandoned. I felt my eyes getting watery and I grasped my biceps gently. Jane noticed and patted my knee.
Jane was the one who kept track of everything. She did background checks on all the families who requested me, which didn't make a difference. I always get hurt somehow. She did monthly visits, calls, texts, letters. Anything and everything.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate it... But it gets a bit excessive sometimes. But Jane has always been like a big sister to me. She was about 37 years old with light blonde hair that reached her shoulder in a clean cut. She was awfully thin for someone her age, and she was damn determined to find me a good family after 12 years.
A few moments later, we pulled up to a grand house. Pleasing to the eye. It stood tall with a yellow outside and white window frames with flowers boxes hanging gracefully. Their three car garage was painted freshly with one door closed, the others exposing a dark blue car and a large grey truck. In front of the house was a beautiful flower garden with butterflies swarming the gorgeous pink daisies and red roses, and a variety of other amazing plants. A small frog statue sat on the brick ledge that held a sign saying "Welcome", which was quite cute actually. I didn't notice how long I was staring until Jane knocked on my window, giggling when I jumped. She nodded for me to get out and meet her by the back of her tan van.
I got out, not bothering to pause my music and slugged over to where she was struggling to pull out my three bags containing my belongings. She huffed when she noticed me watching her, not bothering to help. "I spoil you, you know that?" I just smiled and shrugged. She let out a small, soft laugh and grabbed my last bag, slamming the trunk door closed.
She sighed and adjusted her pencil skirt. "How do I look?" she asked, as if she actually expected an answer from me. I tilted my head and gave her a "really?" look. She just rolled her eyes pulled up the handle on one of my bags. "Great help you are."
We slowly made our way up to the door. Jane rang the door bell and then knocked firmly on the door, fixing her posture. She actually looked serious and formal, where as I probably looked lazy and gross in my plain dark wash shorts, black converse and my favorite "THE 1975" tee shirt (which I got a few years back when a friend took me to one of their concerts).
I heard an excited squeal come from behind the door and then a series of hushes. I rolled my eyes and Jane smiled. The door flung open to reveal a middle aged woman with a huge grin on her face. "Hi! Oh goodness you must be Jane. I am Liz." The woman grabbed Jane's hand and shook it with excitement. "Yes. Nice to meet you. This is Belle." introduced Jane, making me feel exposed and rather uncomfortable. "Hi sweetheart. Lovely name." smiled Liz. I returned a half hearted smile and waved.
"Not much of a talker, huh?" laughed Liz. "Just wait until she gets comfortable. Then she will talk and talk and talk!" giggled Jane. I sighed and shook my head. "Well come in, please. It must be awful hot out there." Liz said with concern on her face. She must have seen the sweat stains on my shirt. She motioned us inside and Jane gladly followed, dragging my bag behind her. I slowly followed and looked around.
As soon as you walk in, you are greeted by a high ceiling living room with neat furniture and lovely wall decorations. I set my bags down as Jane sat with Liz on the couch. "Honey, do you want to look around a bit while we talk?" said Jane, with a look in her eye telling me I had no choice. I nodded and awkwardly stood there. "There are a few rooms upstairs you can choose from. Any one you like!" smiled Liz. I nodded and headed upstairs. I was still listening to my music, trying to calm myself down.
I finally made it up to the top of the stairs when I noticed it was large wide hall that had reached both sides of the house. To my right was a series of doors, all the way to my left was an opening to what seemed to be a game room. I decided to check that out later as I slowly made my way through the rooms. The first door I opened was to the master bedroom, which only seemed to be occupied by one person. It only had women's beauty product sitting on top of the beautiful dresser and the sheets were neatly made.
The second door I opened, toward the middle of the hall, was a bathroom, which I didn't take to much of a look into.
The other doors were quite simple. I am guessing they were the ones Liz was talking about. They were mainly set up for guests who planned on staying a night or two. That's how most of the rooms were until I stumbled upon one, just before the end of the hall. It seemed to be decorated for a teenage male. It had white walls, but it was hard to tell with all of the band posters hanging on almost every inch of the area. The sheets were lazily put together and in the background was the soft singing of Nirvana. I had already fallen in love with the room.
I quietly closed the door and made my way to the last one down the hall. I opened the door easily, and instantly my nostrils filled with the scent of flowers and... Peace. A queen sized bed laid in the corner with a bed frame containing little shelves and drawers. It was a simple white color, which went well with the light green room. A white dresser leaned against the opposite wall and a nice flat screen TV sat on top. I mentally claimed the room and left the door open.
I made my way back downstairs to see Jane and Liz waiting for me. "Pick one?" chirped Liz. I nodded and smiled shyly. She grinned and clasped her hands together. "Great! Well, thank you Jane for bringing this lovely girl and I will give you a call in about 6 months, yeah?" Jane nodded and winked at me when she saw my face filled with confusion. "Don't worry." She mouthed as Liz rushed to the kitchen to get a card for Jane. "This is my business card, just in case I didn't put it on my information sheet." she explained. Jane nodded and shook Liz's hand one last time.
"Alright kiddo. I will see you in a few weeks." Jane pulled me in for a hug and I buried my face in her shoulder, holding on to her tightly. "Give me a call or shoot me a text whenever you need me. I didn't buy you that thing for nothing." She whispered in my ear. I paused my music behind her back and nodded. She kissed my forehead and rubbed my shoulders before giving me a weak smile and heading out the door.
"Ready to unpack?" smiled Liz.
