"But, Mr. Anderson, Do we really only have one choice out of millions?"
Mr. Anderson, our villager leader chuckled lightly as he was grabbing the sheets of my bed, folding them neatly then turning towards me with a warm smile.
"Oh Noah, don't be so worried. I wouldn't exactly say there's millions of choices but there are quite alot."
He explained as he grabbed a broom and started sweeping the dust off the light birch floor. He still had the sheet in between his arm so I guess that meant I wasn't getting to take it with me.
I sighed and looked out the window, finally we're getting out of this plain ol' village but there was so many choices to go live in that it made me incredibly nervous and Mr. Anderson could tell.
He placed a hand on my shoulder and gave me those encouraging eyes. He was the only parental like figure that I've ever had in my life.
I didn't know who or where my parent were and I was only a baby when Mr. Anderson found me.
"Noah" He said as he placed the broom down. "You're 19 years old now, you have the freedom to go out and explore the world now and who knows, you might even find out some new things about yourself that you didn't even know!"
He had this cheesy smile on his face but I could tell it was genuine. It made me feel alot more calmer about this and I think I was finally ready.
I dug into my pocket and brought out the ticket to the train that was taking us away, it said in big bold letters:
ADMISSION FOR ONE PERSON ONLY. YOU MUST BE 18 OR OLDER TO BOARD.
I ran my fingers across the letters and stared at them for a moment before shoving the ticket back in my pocket. I looked at Mr. Anderson with a smile and suddenly, I felt my eyes becoming all stingy and watery.
Mr. Anderson immediately noticed and opened his arms which I ran up and hugged him tightly. "Oh, Noah! You were always like a son to me. I'm going to miss you every day! Promise me, you'll write." He asked as he finally let go.
I ran out the door and looked back one final time. "I promise, Mr. Anderson!"
I finally caught up with the line that was surprisingly not that long, I must have been late but at least I made it before the train was gone.
I grabbed the ticket from my pocket and examined it one more time before looking at the ticket puncher and giving it to him. He smiled at me and put my ticket in a little bin that was right beside him. "Have a nice trip." He said as he motioned me to go inside the train.
"Thank you!" I said back to him as I went towards an empty seat.
I sat down and relaxed as the train started moving after a couple of more people got on, I stared out the window and took a look at my village. I quietly whispered goodbye as I was finally free from this old runned down place.
I closed my eyes and took a breath in before I fell asleep for what felt like hours.
"Noah, my sweet baby boy.. I want to apologize for so many things and I hope once you grow older, you'll understand why we're doing this. It's to keep you safe. The outside world is such a dangerous place for a special boy like you.."
The mysterious women went into a slight sob as she looked at the baby in the basket.
"If there is ever one day where we'll meet again, I'll tell you everything and I hope you'll forgive me and your father. For now, I pray for your safety.."
She leaned and kissed the baby one last time before she weakly knocked on the door and ran off.
"Hello?" A voice called out, a man who seemed young looked down and gasped when he saw a baby boy on his doorstep.
"Oh my god! You poor thing! Let's get you inside and get you out of these wet clothes quickly!"
The man said as he quickly grabbed the baby and took him inside with him.
"Hey kid! Wake up already!"
I was suddenly snapped awake from my slumber as I looked over to see a man staring at me with an annoyed expression.
"Good, you're awake. Do you got any food on ya? I'm starving." The man pleaded with me. I didn't like his tone or how rudely he had woken me up but I felt bad for the guy so I gave him my only apple that I had on me.
His eyes immediately lit up as he took the apple from my hands and took a big bite. "Thank you! Thank you so much!" He exclaimed as he kept biting.
His joy made me smile slightly, I turned and looked out the window to see the dark night sky.
Tomorrow was going to be the day.
Where we would have to choose.
