"Pleeaase, Lonie," the ten-year old cried. "It says here that I should try again," waving the "try again" card before my eyes. "Just one more."
"Max, behave yourself. People are starting to look here," I hissed, looking around the grocery shop. My brother can really be a pain in the ass.
"Lonie, please. Just one more Cookieloom."
When my brother really wants something, he got. And right then he wants a Cookieloom; not because he likem them- he actually hated them. He thought even the name sounded ridiculous- but because of 'The Trip'.
He has been dreaming about that trip to Europe ever since the promo commenced. Today was the last day and he has made me spend all of mum's change and also almost all of my monthly allowance too. He really wanted to win that trip.
He has been tearing open cereal boxes and pouring contents in a large paper bag since we arrived at the grocery store.
"Maxmilliano Gills," I say calmly. "You know, it's not right for us to spend all of my money on lottery."
"It's not lottery. Please, Lonie".
I shake my head no and started walking to the cashier. He follows.
"Fine then. I guess you will have to explain yourself for taking the car out at 3:00 in the morning!" I stopped short in my track. He had changed his tactics!
I needed to take the car out that night. Maggie was at a party and had called me to pick her up. It was an emergency and he had promised not to tell!
"And what about that night in Paris when you sneaked out to see that tattooed guy we saw at the supermarket?"
That "Tattooed Guy We Saw At The Supermarket" was my child-hood best friend I hadn't seen in over 11 years. He and his family had moved from next-door to France. We were even sitting on the porch and I was saying goodbye to him; he was on a music tour and he was going to Venice the following morning! And once again, Max had promised not to tell.
"Do you also remember the time your phone 'accidentally' fell in the lake when Mickey called you to tell you that he was breaking up with you. Mum would love to hear that. That phone cost a fortune! 900 bucks on the go!"
Mickey was my only steady boyfriend and he left me so he could be with Cece, my best friend at that time (we stopped being friends afterwards; the betrayal was too much for me to bear).
He didn't have the guts to tell me in person so he decided to do it on the phone rather. I was so fucked up I just threw the phone in the lake.
My family and I were at a picnic and my parents were parking the car when he called. I had put the phone on loudspeaker and Max heard. As usual, he had promised not to tell and he hadn't even mentioned the subject- until now!
"Oh, oh and I also recall the time-"
"Fine, Fine I will buy the stupid cereal," I say and sigh, accepting defeat. I didn't need to be reminded of all my past eras and sins.
I search my purse frantically and fortunately I find a dollar.
"Here, take this and don't bring up those topics in front of mum dad," I say and hand to him the one-dollar note.
"Thanks, Lonie you are the best big sister ever, " Max says and run to the cereal section.
I pay for the rest of the grocery, wait for him and drive to our house in my mum's brand new SUV.

"Yes, yes, I won!" Max screams from the kitchen. I run downstairs to see what is going on. When I arrive I see my parents are already there.
"Max, what is going on? Are you OK?" Mum asks.
"Mum, I won. I'm going to Italy!" He announces.
"Oh, my God!" I exclaim. "Mum, do you know what this means? It means I just won a trip to La Palm resort."
"I don't understand what is going on here, " Dad says.
"I bought Max a cereal box, which was having a promo and it turned out to be the lucky win," I explain slowly but my voice shows a trace of excitement. "So, I am going to Italy."
"No, I am going to Italy," Max says confidently.
"Well Max we bought the cookieloom with my money so I will be going to Italy," I argued.
"Alright, children, stop. Your father and I will look into this cereal promotion thing and we will let you know who is going and who is not, Ok?" Mum states.
Max mumbles something and stomps up the stairs to his room.
Humph, little boys. And dad says I act like a kid sometimes.
***
"We have decided to let Lonie go," Dad announces. We have just finished a dinner of mum's favourite salmon and wine. Max and I are sitting in the den watching TV when mom and Dad entered.
Ever since Mum's best friend returned from France and told her about the food they ate there, Mum has been preparing these unusual, expensive dishes that were anything but nice. Seriously, you should try it.
"What?!" Max screams, dropping his fork on the floor.
"Max, if we let you go, you would need adult supervision and this trip is a one-person only trip and we don't have enough money to allow another person to go. Your father can't go because of his work. I can't go because your father can't take good care of himself and the house alone. Lonie can go because she is a young adult, she can take care of herself and she doesn't need any supervision," Mum says. "We've made the necessary arrangement so tomorrow, you shall leave at noon."
"OMG! Thanks. You are the best family in the world!" I plant a big wet kiss on mum's cheek and blew two kisses each to my father and Max.
Of course I don't mean it. I'm not some abnormal teenage who is glued to her parents or something.
"Now, I am going to pack. So.... don't disturb me," I say, putting on a sweet, sickly smile and going up the stairs, two stairs at a time.
First thing I do is to call Maggie. "Hey girl what's up?" She seemed a little out of breath.
"Maggie, are you alright?"
"Yeah, perfectly fine. Why what's wrong?"
"You just... never mind. Anyways I called to let you know... I am going to Italy!"
