It's 8:00 in the morning on a Saturday. I am awaken by the sound of my mom yelling at my younger sister. "GET YOUR LAZY ASS UP" my mom
yelled at the top of her lungs to my sister Daisy. Immediately I shot up and ran to the shouting that echoed my house. I ran into the living room and saw Daisy scream as my mom took off her heels and raised them over her head. Immediately without thinking i grabbed the heels from my mom and saved my sister from what I assumed was about to be a very brutal beating. " YOU DON'T SNATCH THINGS FROM ME I AM YOUR MOTHER" she once again yelled but this time it was directed towards me. As she yelled the smell of alcohol hit my face and I wanted to turn away. " You're hardly my mother you're too damn drunk to even know who we are half of the time now do us a favor and go screw your 67th boyfriend of the week mother." I replied back with air quotations around the word mother. " I SWEAR YOU STUPID IGNORANT KIDS ARE SO UNGRATEFUL I BUST MY ASS FOR YALL AND YOU CANT EVEN APPRECIATE THE WORK I DO WHY DON'T YOU JUST LEAVE AND GO WORK AND SEE WHAT ITS LIKE." She once again yelled. I stood silent as she turned away and began drunkenly walking to her room. She slammed the door shut and my sister Daisy ran up the stairs crying like she always does and ran up to her room and shut the door. I sighed and realized I had nothing but underwear and a regular white shirt on. I went up to my room and pulled out some black jeans and a red flannel and quickly changed into them. I walked downstairs and began to make breakfast for my sister and myself because God knows my "mother" wouldn't cook for us. I finished making the pancakes and brought them up to Daisy's room. Through her tears she thanked me and I lean forward to hug her. After we were done hugging she motioned for me to get out so that she can be alone. I complied and stood up and exited the room. I pulled out my phone and see that I had received no notifications as usual. I threw my phone on the coach and turned on the tv and began to watch Judge Judy. After about an hour or so I heard my sister scream and I quickly ran up the stairs. I burst through the door and saw my sister unconscious with bruises around her face and I saw my mom with blood on her knuckles and a belt in her hands. I pushed my mom on the floor and quickly ran to my sisters aid. I began to sob hard , the tears falling down my face and hitting the floor like bullets. I turned around and and saw that my mom had left. I began to look for her but then I heard the police sirens and a knock on my door. I leave my sister and run to the door hoping to get some help but my mom seems to have beat me to it. She greets the officers and tells them that I threw her on the floor and beat my little sister. My heart sinks all the way down to my stomach as I yell the words "SHES A GOD DAMN LIAR." The police officers seem to ignore my pleas and cries and explanations and proceed to arrest me and read my Miranda rights. I am now in the back of a squad car being transported to the police department for something I didn't do. They begin the booking process and I plea to them to let me go. The officers shake their head and say "sorry miss we can't let you go." I begin to sob and plea and throw a tantrum like a 3 year old who wants a toy at the store. The officers then shut me up by telling me that since I have the right to a phone call and the fact that my moms in the hospital with my sister they will transport me to the hospital to go say goodbye to my "mother" and sister before they throw me in jail. I smile and thank them and before I even know it we are in the hospital. The police officers escort me to the hospital where my sister is and they let me talk to my sister while they talk to my mother. "Hey Daisy" I say looking at my bruised and beaten sister. She replied with a thumbs up and a smile and I couldn't help but smile back. "Hey listen...." I began to say "if the police ask just tell them what mom says I did is true for me okay Daisy?" She looks up at me clearly confused and began to say the phrase "but you didn't do this to me" but I cut her off at didn't. "Daisy things are just complicated right now okay you have to trust me okay it'll be okay" I say holding back tears. A tear drop streams down Daisy's left cheek and she nods and leans in for a hug. "So on a scale from 1-10 how are you feeling Daisy" I ask making conversation. "A 9" she says back to me without thought. Without warning the police officer picks me up and says it's time to go. I shout the words " I love you " to Daisy as I'm being forced out the door and she says them back. You might've thought i was just making conversation with Daisy about asking her the scale question but I was testing her strength. She gave me a 9 rating when I know deep down she was feeling a 10. This is how I know my sister was a fighter and this is how I knew I could escape and perhaps lead a better life on my own and come back for my sister soon. She was a fighter and now I had be one for both of us. Yes I had to and the only way I could start is by escaping.
