Particulars of account: rents receivable from the Templars' property at Bristol, 1309–13

William Randalf, custodian of the Templars' former possessions at Bristol, sets out a list of rents receivable with the names and status of tenants and details of what they are renting. Tenants are leasing mesuages (dwelling houses or tenements), shops and vacant plots; some are specified to be holding at fee, or to be tenants at will (ad voluntatem domini) or tenants for life (ad vitam). Rent is payable in equal portions at Easter (i.e., at some point in spring between 21 March and 21 April) and Michaelmas (29 September). Note that some tenants are women. In the enrolled account, at TNA E 358/20 rot. 2 dorse, it is explained that in fact four of these tenants did not pay the rent due every year and that the pension payable from the vicar's benefice was not paid. Here the reasons for non-payment are explained: some of the properties were standing empty, because of the lack of tenants or because the buildings were in need of repair; and some rent remained unpaid because of the Bristolians' rebellion against the king.

Words between X X have been crossed through in the manuscript.
