Saint John's, Florida

Wesley quietly filled the duffel bag with clothes, money, food, and his father's knife getting ready for the journey ahead. He had to leave, if he stayed it would eventually kill him. Wesley touched the pendant around his neck, a final gift from his mother and stepped out of the house into the darkness.

Wesley lost his parents in a train wreck when he was seven, then was adopted out to a greedy, cruel couple. They were always blaming him for their mistakes, beating him for things he never did. Then when the relationship fell apart he was left with an abusive alcoholic step-father. Wesley had been forced to live with him for twelve years, they were the most brutal years of his life. Now was the time to leave, he knew how to survive, and could easily do so. Wesley walked down the road.....not thinking about what lay behind him but what lies ahead..........

Many months had passed since that day when he stumbled through the door of a local family diner situated on the outskirts of Agua Dulce California. Wesley had become extremely thin, covered in dirt from head to toe, and exhausted beyond belief. After taking a couple steps he collapsed and fell into a deep sleep.

"We're closed, come back tomorrow." The restaurant owner said as he came out from the kitchen.

He saw the boy on the floor and yelled for his wife "Caroline, come quickly!"

"What is it Victor?" She replied from the back.

"There is a boy out here, help me get him outside."

"Just tell him to leave, we will be open tomorrow."

"I can't, he passed out when he came in here."

"What are you doing?!?" Caroline demanded as she came out to see Victor kneeling over the boy inspecting him.

The boy looked around nineteen years old, he was quite pale and had a nasty mass of grey hair covering his face. His clothes were ripped in many places and scars could be seen through the tears, they covered nearly all of his back and some even ran over his shoulder to his chest.

"I just want to know who he is, I wonder what he has in that bag." Victor replied with curiosity in his voice as he eyed the duffel bag next to the boy.

"It's not good to snoop around in people's stuff."

"A little peek won't hurt anyone, I'll be quick."

Victor carefully opened the bag expecting the worst but was surprised to only see clothes, an empty water bottle, and a knife. The knife was slender with a handle that looked as if it was made of vines and at the hilt was a beautiful crescent moon, it was a masterpiece.

"It's just some clothes and a knife." Victor told his wife as he refilled the bag.

"What are we going to do, we can't just leave him here." Caroline asked still curious about where the boy came from.

"Help me get him outside, we can put him on the bench and he will be on his way when he wakes up."

"We can't do that. It's just not right, let's bring him back home with us, and find out what he is doing way out here."
