When Chance was one he said his first words. Why it took him so long no one ever knew, but his first words were always, always repeated. Chance would say them to everyone who passed him.
"Nowhere," he'd said. A giggle, then Chance had let his tiny baby tooth show as he grinned. "Nofing." His hands would clap together in joy as he said them to his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
"What's wrong with him?" they'd ask.
"Nothing."
"Where's he going?" they'd joke.
"Nowhere."
They had no clue how far away from the truth they were.
