Melting Ice Cream and Bathroom Reunions

"Oi, look at what the wind blew in." Sun said as we entered the shop. Next to him was Neptune who was scarfing down a weird variety of ice cream flavors.

"Oh, Neptune! I had no idea you'd be here!" Weiss said, feigning surprise. She even did the wide eyed thing too. "What a strange totally not planned coincidence!"

"Wow, Weiss, you almost seemed believable," I comment. "I almost believed you."

Ruby snorted from behind Weiss, who was giving me a "I will end you" death stare. "Well," she muttered, clearing her throat. "It doesn't matter what you say. I came here for ice cream!"

Ruby jumped up. "Me too! Let's get some already!" We did just that, with Ruby getting her special strawberry ice cream, but Blake sat staring at something.

"Um... Blake," I whispered, leaning closer to her. "Your ice cream is melting."

She didn't even react to me, instead her gaze was fixed on something behind her. I followed where she was looking: Sun Wukong. Ugh, something like this was bound to happen. No prob though, I reminded myself. No problem at all.

"Blake?"

"Y-yeah," she mumbled, still looking at Sun. Her ice cream was already melting. Wait, do cats even like ice cream? Wait, but she's part cat and human so she does? And ice cream is milk, and cats like milk. Yeah, she likes ice cream. Flawless logic.

Jeez, I'm a horrible person.

"Blake, if you keep on staring at him like that, it'll burn a hole in his head." I mutter irritatedly. "Might as well go talk to him."

Blake starts blushing like she always does around Sun. "What? I wasn't staring at anyone. I was just... admiring the color of the walls." I roll my eyes, my irritation growing. "Blake, the walls are white. Not much to really admire." "Well it's a pretty white, Yang." She replies, poking her spoon at her ice cream. "It looks pretty... a pretty white... like looking at the sun."

"The Sun?" I repeat. "Jeez, Blake...you shouldn't drop such big hints." She looks at me with those gold eyes. Those eyes could probably get her out of prison. "I... I'm not dropping any hints. But--if I was... it wouldn't be so obvious." Blake sets down her spoon and looks at her ice cream (barely ice cream, now it's mostly an ice cream soup). "Do you really think I should talk to him though?" I swallow hard, "Y-Yeah. I think you should."

Her face lit up like a light. I had to keep myself from bursting into flames... metaphorically.

"Wow, thanks Yang. I'll go talk to him now!" She got up out of her seat without a moments hesitation. I watched her carefully as she took a seat in between Sun and Neptune and instantly took up in a conversation.

I tried my hardest not to fall into oblivion, but that was impossible. So I buried my face in my arms and laid my head on the table. "I hate that stupid monkey," I muttered.

"Yang..." Ruby called out quiet as she could. "You're getting ice cream in your hair." I sat upright, and sure enough I had sticky vanilla ice cream in my hair. "Great, this day has been getting better an better." I grumble.

"Well someone's in a bad mood," comments Weiss, nonchalantly taking sips from her smoothie. I scowl at her. "Jeez Weiss, how'd you figure that one out?" Ruby leans across the table and spreads her arms out, separating us. "Girls, can we all just chill down and ENJOY our ice cream?!"

I stand up and push my chair in and hurry to walk to the bathroom.

I can feel Blake looking at me. I stop walking and turn to her, and I'm met with a sad but warm set of sunset golden eyes. She doesn't say anything, but her face looks kinda gloomy. Funny, I thought she'd be happier sitting next to Sun.

I shake my head and walk to the bathroom. It's cold, with the ambient sound of dance music playing in the background. My kind of jam. I wash out my hair with water, hopefully I'll have time to wash it before we get really busy tomorrow. I splash my face with cool water.

"I saw you looking at me just now," says a familiar voice. It echoes in the bathroom, bouncing off the tiled walls.

"Blake," I murmur. "I didn't hear you come in. How's everything with Sun?" Pretending to be like this, like okay, just to make sure Blake doesn't worry is not the way. But why do I feel like it's my responsibility to keep her happy? Love? I almost blush at the word.

She walks closer to me and leans against the sinks. "Is everything okay? You don't seem very well." Blake asks, feeling my forehead. "Fever maybe?"

I'm fine, is what I want to say. But I don't. Instead, I splash my face with water again to keep myself from saying anything stupid. "I don't have a fever, I'll tell you that much. Maybe it's bad ice cream," I joke half-heartedly. Blake looks at me again, and I try to break her gaze. I go back to staring at my own hands which are resting under the running water of the sink.

"I-I hope you're having fun with Sun."

Blake looks down at her own hands. "I am."

"Good."
"Yeah."

We both sit in an uncomfortable silence, like one of us is waiting for the other to say something important. Blake clears her throat, and talks first. "S-Sun invited me to the Cinema... on Friday."

"That's nice."

I turn off the water, silently praying in my head that this entire moment will end. But it doesn't. "I turned him down," she continues. "Because I said I'd go with you on that Friday." I can feel the tugging in my chest again, that warm feeling of fire in my stomach. The cold chill and goosebumps, but at the same time it feels... hot.

"You turned him down," I repeat. "To go with me?" I try not to look at her. If I do I'll only blush wildly.

"Obviously, Yang, I promised I'd go with you didn't I?" she chuckles. "And, um, I'm sorry about the ice cream I wasted today. I'll pay you back." I shake my head, "no, it's fine!"

I look at her from the corner of my eye. Her eyes are closed but she's smiling and facing up. "You know," she began. "I honestly do like ice cream. I love it, actually, despite me being unable to stand sweets. I love the way it tastes."

"That's good to know," I grin. "I also love ice cream. But I don't normally get it stuck in my hair like this." We both laugh, genuinely laugh, like two people.

It feels strange. Like we're two friends who are having a reunion after a bunch of years passed or something. It feels like we barely know each other anymore and are just starting to accept each other again.

And I like the feeling.
