"Sense what?" I asked, staring up at the cracked walls and torn, stained posters. There was a tiny crack in the glass as well.
"The...aura." He said breathlessly. That's when I turned my eyes away from the bright pink light, and towards him. The fluorescent cast his face into an arty of abstract shadows and angles. It was like he was a walking Picasso piece. The cool northern wind stirred his short hair, and turned his nose red. He looked so human. With that wonderment gleaming in his eyes, his breath coming out in transparent vapour, and how...normal he looked. I wonder if I looked somewhat like that in this moment as well.
"Let's go in. I'm freezing. And I can sense...something inside." He said, turning his gaze to me. With a brief glance my way, he began walking up the sidewalk and to the glass door. Behind it, the bar was pitch black inside. I watched as Starlight hesitated outside the door, with his hands shoved deep into his pockets and his head bent toward the ground to keep his chin and cheeks from the cold wind. It wasn't helping much. He turned partially, looking over his shoulder at me. For some reason, in that exact moment, I thought of us as two teenage human kids. Starlight was the giddy one, trying something rebellious, while I was the unimpressed one. Because I probably had broken into more places than he ever had. I probably did drugs too.
"Come on!" He whispered, none too quietly.
"Fine." I sighed and walked to where he stood. I paused, waiting for him to open the door and usher me inside. He didn't.
"Uh...the door's stuck." He breathed. Looking up at me, somewhat sheepishly.
"I feel like I'm the adult." I retorted, and pushed him aside. I looked down at he doors handle. There was none. Only a keyhole. "This isn't that hard, Starlight."
"Well, unlike you, I don't break into places so I don't know how to pick a lock!" He snapped back.
"First of all, I have to break into people's bedrooms to get their dreams. So I know how to pick door locks, and window locks. That are two stories above my head." I said with a tinge of pride. "Plus, we're fücking demons. And not just normal ones. We don't need to pick locks!"
"Whatever - just get us inside!" He murmured, annoyed. As if I was the one who kept is waiting.
It took me a few minutes to think of a way to break open the door without making much noise. After some impatient huffs from Starlight, I finally formed an idea. I grinned to myself as Starlight paced behind me, oblivious to what I was going to do.
"Are you done -?"
"Hey, Starlight," we both said at the same time.
"What?" He snapped, looking at me. He squinted at my smirking mouth and at the mischievous twinkle I'm sure I had in my eyes.
"What...?" He asked again, more wearily. "What are you planning to do...? Incubus...?"
"Come over here and see." I replied, completely laid back. He was so easy to stupefy. He'd be so shocked, his eyes would bulge out of his head and I'd laugh at his face. I leaned back against the cold, hard wall and watched everything unfold.
I watched like a predator as Starlight walked past me, looking down at the door, expecting to see something.
"You...there's nothing..." He mumbled, looking from the perfectly intact door to my grinning face. "Incubus - what is this? Just open the goddamn-baby-Jesus door already!"
"Are you sure there's nothing wrong with it?" I laugh loudly as I shove Starlight into the door. Just as I suspected, the glass shattered under the force of his weight. He fell, half inside the dark bar, and half out. I looked down at his fallen figure to see him staring up at me, shock written all over his face. His eyes were wide, and his mouth was agape. I laughed, throwing my head back as I steeped over his surprised form.
"See? I told you I could open it."
