Should I go in or let her sleep for a while longer?
I awoke to the sound of hushed voices seconds before my mother barged into my room in alliance with a pot of hot tea and some scrambled eggs on a tray.
'Good morning, my darling, I hope you aren't too hung over from your Birthday? How is my sweet sixteen year old then?' She smiled, placing the tray on my lap and simultaneously planting a glossy kiss on my cheek.
'Thank you, mum,' I replied appreciatively, 'You really shouldn't have gone to all this effort'.
'Anything for you, honey.' She beamed, then turned her back to mine as she drew back the curtains.
My little girl has finally grown up...
'Was that you, mum?' I enquired upon hearing a hushed voice on the opposite side of the room.
'Was what me? I haven't heard a thing.'
'Never mind... I just thought...'
Strange... was I supposed to have heard anything?
I could now confirm that this quiet vocal announcement was certainly not my mother, for although it sounded as though she had been speaking, her lips had not moved in the slightest.
'Darling, are you alright?' Mum asked, cocking her head to one side, a look of both puzzlement and concern filling her doe-brown eyes.
'Um... I think it's just me.'
'Oh, okay then sweetie, have a nice breakfast!'
She winked, then left, pulling the door shut behind her. For a few moments I simply sat there, perplexed. Was I going crazy? I was barely even an adult and I was seemingly already susceptible to hearing voices. I probably would have spent longer contemplating the matter but I was interrupted by the bleep of my phone.
'Thanks for the party last night babes, hope u had a great time n got sum mint prezzies! Tyra XXX'
The arrival of this text made me smile; no matter how different I was from my best friend, Tyra Martins always had a way of making people love her, though I still don't understand how someone who can't even spell receipt can get into one of the top private schools in the country. Thinking nothing more of the convoluted events that had just occurred, I replied to my friend, turned to my breakfast and got stuck in.
