Chapter 8: A Chip On Your Shoulder

The night had begrudgingly carried on with the sounds of the air conditioning whirring obnoxiously in Bastien's ears. Sleeping on the ground wasn't making matters with his back problem he got from pushing the car from earlier any better and to top it off, he now knows that Hazel talks in her sleep; loudly.

He tossed to his other side in hopes to find comfort but there was no such luck. It was probably the most uncomfortable he's been in awhile and that's saying a lot.Groaning at his displeasure, he sat up on the floor and peered at the seemingly asleep Hazel.

It was safe to assume she was asleep, right? A heavy sigh followed as he got up to his feet and managed to get to the bathroom without stumbling over something on the way over. Flipping the switch on, he rubbed his eyes to shield them from light sensitivity before he was able to look at himself in the mirror.

A smirk found its way to his face at the sight of his own appearance; vanity was sure his strong suit. Nose laughing at that, he decided to use the restroom before attempting to go back to sleep. If he hadn't said he'd sleep on the floor, he would already be sound asleep by now.

He just hoped that Hazel wouldn't be so cruel as to let him sleep on the floor every night. 'Now that wouldn't be so fair...' His thoughts emitted sarcastically while he washed his hands and shook them off.

When he left the bathroom, the first thing he heard was Hazel's sleep whimpering. It was odd hearing that sound come from her since all she ever sounded like around Bastien was disgruntled with a hint of disdain, causing him to believe that was her permanent tone when they spoke. Hearing her whimpers were the first for him.

Shrugging it off and cautiously finding his makeshift bed, he crawled back under his thin blanket sheet and laid on his side which he deemed was the most comfortable position among the others.

The male couldn't help but wonder what dream Hazel would have to make her sound so distressed but his curiosity was known to be a bad thing so he left it at that. With the noisy air conditioning kicking back on again, Bastien knew he was gonna have a long, sleepless night.

Like the blink of an eye, morning had crept up on the two; like an uninvited guest. Unable to get a wink of sleep from the night before, Bastien got up anyway without much complaining. It wasn't the first time and certainly not the last where sleep wasn't in his favor. He instantly took note of the energy resonating from Hazel who got up without a care in the world.

"At least one of us got a good night's sleep. What's got you so giddy, Sally Sunshine? Remember, we're still stuck out here..." He stared at the girl with slouched eyes and the tone of his voice was volatile from the obvious lack of sleep.

He could tell the female took pleasure in seeing him in his current state as she simply grinned at his brooding demeanor. "Yeah. Stuck out here because of your own doing. The events of last night are still fresh in my mind so I'd prefer it if we don't talk so casually."

She turned on her heel and began folding some sheets as a distraction from the male. Bastien knew that an apology won't fix it this time or anytime in general with him. Not after what he said to her. Every apology he ever says will be taken with a grain of salt in Hazel's minds. Throwing his hands up in disbelief, he headed outside for some air from the tense room.

It seemed like every time they were getting somewhere with each other, Bastien always found some way to screw that ideal up out of habit. He'd admit that it was entertaining to see her reaction to things but when she catches on, the fun factor tends to fade away and they end up on bad terms all over again.
