"You did what?!"
Ana flinched, holding the cell phone that had been against her ear as far away as she could as her father's voice roared down the line. He didn't get angry all that often, but when he did, there was no escaping it. She chewed on her lower lip, trying to avoid the knowing gaze of Cain as he leaned against the doorway to her bedroom in her new house. They'd managed to get all her stuff out, and had been here for about two hours before her father had finally come home. Then the phone had rung. And rung. And rung. Finally getting annoyed at it Cain had made her ring him, or threatened to take all her stuff back. Realising she was getting a little off track, Ana tried to focus back on the conversation at hand with as little damage to her precious ears as possible.
"I can not believe you would do this. And behind my back, no less. Cain, I know you can hear me, I expect a reasonable explanation for this or else there will be severe consequences, I can promise you that." His voice, dark and threatening, was clearly loud enough to be heard by Cain, a werewolf, just across the small room, and Ana bit her tongue when she saw him smile, trying to stifle a giggle.
"Dad, please, I told you I wanted to move out. I'm twenty one, I work, earn a decent wage, have my own car it was about time I had my own place as well. Besides, what twenty one year old wants to be living at home?"
The argument continued, more or less in this fashion, for another hour until her father finally gave in with the extracted promise that she would return for dinner at least twice a week, plus visit him on the weekend and to call if she ever needed anything. Sighing, she slid her phone into her butt pocket of her jeans and rubbed her eyes. It had been a long day, she was still tired, and Jaspar still hadn't come home. As if reading her thoughts, Cain spoke up, cocking his head to the side slightly in a wolf fashion.
"Jaspar's here," he said, turning and making his way down the hall to the living room and front door, leaving her to follow him if she chose to. Ana watched his rear end with amusement, he really did look good in those jeans she mused. In fact, Cain looked good in almost anything he wore, at times she enjoyed it, other times it irked her to no end how he managed it with so little effort. The white collar shirt, and brown vest set off the broadness of his shoulders, the toned stomach and narrow hips and the rolled up sleeves made his muscles look twice their actual size. Deciding to make a hot chocolate, she wandered after him, thinking about the comparison of the main men in her life.
Making it about halfway, the only warning she had was a slight stomping on the carpet floors before she found herself laying face down on the floor, a rather heavy weight on her back. "Jaspar, get off," her voice muffled by the carpet, she tried her best to push herself up instead only succeeding in causing him to rock with laughter. "And just where have you been? You didn't help us move a single thing?" It occurred to her the oddness of the exchange, her laying here on the floor with a long, red haired vampire having a laughing fit while sitting on her curvy bottom.
"Aww did you miss me my little fairy?" Pinching her bottom repeatedly Jaspar grinned from ear to ear. "I'm sorry, I had something I needed to do last night, but I'm here now. I can make it up to you, I'll make you dinner!" Jumping off her in time to avoid Cain punching him in the head, Jaspar grinned impishly, sauntering into the kitchen, his long, wavy red hair swaying as he walked.
Rolling over, she lay on her back, listening to the sounds of them arguing over what to cook for dinner, the warm fabric of the carpet enveloping her like a soft glove and started to laugh. Feeling it bubble up through her chest, she laughed, the release of tension making her feel better than she had in ages. Eventually her giggling turned into hiccups, which turned into sobs and eventually to the point where all she could do was make a squeaky wheezing noise, not be able to breathe and have tears rolling down her face. It was at this stage that both Cain and Jaspar came to stand over, matching expressions of concern and wariness on their face sending her into a complete relapse of laughter. By the time she was able to stop, Jaspar had made a hot chocolate for himself and her, of course refusing to make one for Cain, and he was sitting on the couch, his long thin legs crossed in front of him just watching her. Cain hovered by the phone, frowning at her.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" She exclaimed, raising her hands defensively, "I'm fine, really, I am. I just, I haven't been this happy in a long time, that's all." The goofy grin still played on her cheeks as she rose, pushing herself up off the carpet with a slight groan. The night was steadily getting later, she had work in the morning, and all she wanted to do was dance around the house happily. Her father was right, there really was something wrong with her. Still, it felt right. Declining the hot chocolate, though that had been her original intention for coming down, all she wanted now was a hot bath, and to sleep, she headed towards the hallway and calling over her shoulder.
"I'm going for a bath, can the two of you try to not wreck the house tonight? It is, after all, my first night away from home and I want it to stay this tidy for as long as possible." Being a vampire, Jaspar was only up at night, but Cain had been up most of the day, it was likely he'd end up going to bed soon as well. That was the reason she'd needed a two bedroom place, Cain's room would be the one next to hers, Jaspar had his own place and would sleep where he would. Hearing the low murmur of conversation, she smiled to herself, before heading down to the end of the hall and closing the door, preparing for a bath.
The descending silence between Jaspar and Cain was broken as Cain cleared his throat, meeting Jaspar's gaze straight on and holding it. The dominance between them was something that had always been a problem for him, Jaspar did not act like a dominant should, but nor was he a submissive, it frustrated him to no end. His eyes followed Ana as she walked down the hallway, always aware of Jaspar's eyes doing the same. Cain hadn't been meaning to say anything, but when Jaspar got up with the intention of following her, he spoke up.
"You shouldn't do that. She was worried about you, even if she won't tell you that herself." They both knew what he was talking about, there were secrets even they kept from her.
"You know I do not do so with intention, I am not some stray pup for you to feel the need to reprimand either. What would you rather I do, bring them here?" Jaspar's voice lost it's usual joking tone, and to Cain's ears it seemed he sounded almost desperate. Certain events even they kept secret from her. "Stay out of it Cain, it's vampire business." Cain's eyes narrowed as he watched Jaspar walk down the hall, shutting the bathroom door behind him firmly. Cain growled low in his throat, turning away to busy himself with something else.
