A bookshop is a haven that carries people’s minds in a world of imagination, learning and discovery. Different types of people have their own choices of bookshop depending on their interests and preferences. For book enthusiasts who love to read mainstream books, the National Bookstore is the perfect place for them. The Book Sale is the ideal place for penny-pinching readers. And for those readers who are history fanatic and literature aficionado, Solidaridad Bookshop is the absolute zone for them.
A gleaming gem in the sea of treasures
As you walk on the dusty and busy street of Padre Faura in Ermita, you will pass by on this mini but fascinating bookshop. A lot of rare books are displayed in front that’ll surely puzzle your mind. Upon entering on its door, you’ll find yourself locked on a promising paradise. Soft music will penetrate your ears and carry you to the rich culture of ancient and modern day Filipinos.
A far-flung cave of dazzling jewels and stones
Owned by the National Artist for Literature, Francisco Sionil José, the shop offers an array of ancient and contemporary works comprising both local and international writers. Most prominent are the works of F Sionil José, which include the Rosales Saga, Ermita and Gagamba (Spider- man). F Sionil Jose is one of the most widely read Filipino writers in the English language. His works portray the life of an ordinary Filipino, who struggles to fight discrimination and intolerance.
Different Tagalog works can also be found here, such as “Banaag at Sikat,” “Tula at Kuwento ng Katutubong Bukidnon,” “Ang Mag-anak na Cruz,” and “Peace for Mindanao.” These books discuss various social and political issues in the country.
Historical books are also available here, like the “Daily life in the Hellenistic Age: from Alexander to Cleopatra,” “Virgil: A study in civilized poetry,” and “The Generalship of Muhammad.”
Just like a typical bookshop, magazines and cookbooks can also be bought at the Solidaridad Bookshop. A lot of local and international periodicals are likewise offered here to cater the needs of foreigners as well as Filipinos. If you’re a business entrepreneur or has the desire to start a local business; well, this is the right place for you.
