Chapter Two

Madge's POV

  After I shut the door, I run upstairs once again and plonk down onto my comfy bed. Thankfully, I didn't encounter anyone as I made my way up the stairs or they would see my face and no doubt, ask me what was wrong.
  Tears well up in my eyes but I hold them back, not wanting anyone to suddenly barge into my room and see this. I know it will be pointless to lock the door, because my father has the key. I eventually sob as I think about tons of things like my sick mother, the flowers on my dress, Katniss, skillfully carved bows, coal mines in the district...Gale. What did I do to offend him? I don't know at all. He always gives me glares in school, disgusted looks too sometimes. He never talked to me. That was the first time. I don't care anymore, I need to curl my hair.

Gale's POV

  I can't stand the sight of that girl. She's the mayor's daughter. I know it's not her fault but I still hate her. So many privileges and so much money. The worst thing is that she doesn't need to take any tessarae since she's so rich so she only needs to put her name in less than 10 times whereas I have a huge family and I'm 18, of course my name is in loads more than hers.
I sigh. Katniss and I stroll quietly and soon end up at her house. "Wear something pretty," I say flatly before walking back to my own house.

Katniss POV

  Gale walks away and I do the same. When I enter my bedroom, I see a soft blue dress lying on my bed. I instantly know it's my mom's. I pick it up and wear it before letting my sister, Prim(Primrose), braid my hair.
Soon, my mother, sister and I set off for the town square, where the reaping is to be held.

Madge's POV

I soon arrive at the town square. I step out of the gigantic, luxurious, white car and go to the clusters of children and teenagers aged 12 to 18. I find the 16 year olds and try to blend in but it's hard since I'm wearing this dress that stands out a bit too much. Some of the 16 year olds stare at me but I manage to shake it off like how I do every year. I spot Katniss looking at Gale every now and then but he only notices as my father gives a speech. They lock eyes for a couple of seconds before Gale looks away. I look at the seats on the stage for the important guests and realize Haymitch isn't there...
  As soon as I think about it, Haymitch comes staggering up the stage. He's drunk, definitely drunk, dead drunk. He's blabbering something about the games and swinging his bottle of liquor around as he speaks. I wonder in his drunken state, if he can even train the tributes? He then points to the camera and says," The Hunger Games! Hahaha...festive season! Killing! Red hot blood! Music to your ears capitol! What if we did that to you! Life, so short but made shorter! Yes, ye..." There's a loud thud and paramedics carry him off on a stretcher. One word. Wow.
My father quickly tries to divert the attention to his speech as he raps it up. Afterwards, he takes his seat on the stage and Effie Trinket comes to the microphone. She's bobbing up and down like a balloon losing air and has a smile on so radiant, a thousand Suns couldn't beat it.
Effie goes on about what a pleasure it is to be here and how she can't wait for The 74th Hunger Games and on and on and on...

  After what seems like eternity, she finally starts to go the the glass balls with our names in it. "Ahh and I almost forgot, Happy Hunger Games and may the odds be ever in your favour!" Effie exclaims in her silly capitol accent. Seems like she remembered the ever-popular line.
She claws around in the ball and eventually snaps up a tiny, white sheet of paper. Please, I think to myself, not me. She reads out the name.
And it isn't me.

Its Katniss Everdeen.
