Alena definitely did not see it coming.

On a typical date night, you'd expect cute and cuddly moments throughout the night. Holding hands, smiling at each other, making out, even just looking at each other's eyes.

This was a night that Alena had been looking forward to for ages. Newt, her boyfriend, promised that this night, he would be all his. To make up for lost time, she remembered distinctly.

The thing was, Newt had been very busy. He came home late, he'd avoid her as much as he could, and she doesn't even get to hold him anymore.

Whenever Alena asked about what's he doing so late at night, he'd be cranky. He'd start answering her questions, with questions. And she was quite fed up with his cranky attitude.

Until one night, he climbed onto their supposed shared bed and placed an arm around her waist. Newt peppered his girlfriend's neck with kisses, which he knew she would melt for.

But not tonight.

Alena turned her body so that she was facing him. Instead of her heart melting at the sight of her girlfriend, she felt angry.

Who does he think he is, climbing onto her bed at an unholy hour, and kissing her, and thinking that everything would be okay?

"What do you want, Newt?" she furrowed her eyebrows.

He didn't know how she felt; he didn't know it felt like to be alone at night, he didn't know what it felt like to be waiting for his loved one to come home, he didn't know what it felt like to stare at the ceiling, not being able to sleep, with a million thoughts running through his mind.

"I'm sorry, love, for not having time for you, for not spending time with you, for always-"

"Save it, Newt, sorry's not going to make up for all those weeks."

"Let me make it up to you, princess, I am so sorry," he pulled her closer to him.

"One date. I promise, I'll make it up to you. I'll make the night super special, the night where I'm all yours."

Alena didn't want to fall for it, he's done this way too many times before. But with puppy eyes like that?

Who could resist?

---

The night itself, was pretty okay. With Newt's phone ringing every 5 minutes, Alena was feeling kinda annoyed.

"Are you going to pick that up?" she asked, picking at her food.

Newt picked up his phone and checked his messages, he hurriedly typed in something before turning it off and putting it away.

Futile attempts at small talk, the 'wonderful' night that Newt promised was going down the drain.

"Alena," he attempted once more at small talk, drawing tiny circles on her hand.

"Yes?" sh asked, still feeling kinda awkward.

Newt grinned at Alena, a feature that usually makes her heart melt. Oh how precious is his smile.

The two of them held eye contact for a moment, her staring at his dark brown eyes, and him staring at your green ones. Usually when the two of them hold eye contact, they're trying to tell each other something words can't complete.

This time, Alena was trying to tell him to stop making the date so awkward and start making the date more lively.

On the other hand, Newt wants to tell her something, something that has been bugging him for ages. But doesn't dare to say out.

"So, have you heard about the new ice cream stall at the park?" Newt pushed that thought out of his mind, and tried to focus on his girlfriend, who was pretty done with him.

Not today, he told himself.

He didn't want to hurt her, especially after what's he has already done. He didn't want to rub salt into the wound.

"Really?" Alena felt the corners of her mouth curve as the topic of ice cream and sweet things came up. Newt knows how much she loves those sweet things.

"Say, do you wanna go there after we're done? I know you want some chocolate chip and cookie dough ice cream," Newt coaxed her.

And for the first time in a while, Alena felt joy.

---

Holding hands and strolling towards the park, Alena couldn't help but think that Newt was keeping something from her.

From his nervous gestures to his watch, to his constant check of his mobile, she's never seen him that anxious since their first date.

"Hey, Newt?" she burst the little bubble of thought Newt had, as he directed his attention to her.

"Yes, love?"

"Are you okay? Do you have something on your mind? You can share it with me," she flashed him a small smile.

Newt returned the smile, "I'm okay, just a few worries I have about work."

Work.

That was his excuse for everything. His reason to come home at the unholy hours of the night.

"Love, I have a few more reports to do then I'll be home."

"Princess, I'm sorry. I'm working overtime tonight. I love you."

But Alena decided not to make it a big deal out of it. At least not in public, where there were loads of people.

She smiled and kissed Newt on the cheek, which seemed to please him as they continue to walk towards the ice cream stall, which was visible from where she was standing right now.

She trusted Newt wholeheartedly, she was pretty confident that Newt wasn't like the rest. Cheating, lying, abusive bastards who only wanted to get into her pants.

Alena loves Newt and Newt loves Alena. She's sure of it.

But that doesn't explain the stitches she finds on his body every now and then.
