Chapter 9
Cade
When I came to, I knew I was screwed. Unlike movie scenes, where the hero is tied up in the middle of an abandoned warehouse, I was smack in the middle of nowhere. Trees and bushes stretched as far as I could see, which wasn't very far. A pale sliver of the half-moon above me, made light around my feet, but other than that - nothing. At least the moon wasn't full. If it had been, I would have been full out screwed.
Considering that there were no forests in the area, I knew that I had to be in one of the parks that housed 'endangered eco-systems' or something. Why a pack of Werewolves would choose a stupid place like this, with little to no forest-like places around them was beyond me. The entire area was Grassland or Savannah, not exactly a place for a Wolf. A movement in the corner of my eye caught my attention and I turned toward it. A dark, feminine giggle rose up around me.
It was nothing like the light, teasing ones I had to endure with my sister and Annika. This was just plain dark. "What do you want?" I asked. Silence greeted me. "I know you're there and I know you want something, so get it over with, will you. I have a project to finish." Right in front of me the bushes moved. I braced myself to come face to face with a Wolf, but what I saw left me speechless.
Black Scarlett's incarnate mask appeared out of the shadows and her lips were twisted into a smile. Her eyes seemed dark, even with the shadows still partially covering her face. "I believe," she growled, "that you answered my question, Cade Jager." I squirmed slightly in my seat. How did she know my name? My hands were tugging at the bonds tying me to the chair, but to no end. Even if I had my knife in my hand, I wouldn't be able to escape. Breaking my thumbs wouldn't work either, this girl knew how to tie ropes.
I decided to stall. "Long time no see, Black. Anyway, what was the question again?" I said, nonchalantly.
I could see her momentary pause. "Nobody calls me that, except..." She curled her lips into a smirk. "So you're the boy that didn't tell. I guess I have to thank you for that. If they knew the truth, it would have taken away the fun of seeing their faces when they realised what they were up against."
Something about her voice was bothering me. It was low, husky and scratchy, but also... Familiar. I couldn't place it, but her voice seemed to be bouncing around in my mind. This was the girl I was obsessed with finding? Why the hell had I wanted to find her other than to slit her throat?
"My pleasure." I mocked. In hindsight, I probably should have told the others about her Supernatural status, but something had always forced me to swallow my words. Black Scarlett sneered.
"What are you and your pathetic excuse for a family doing here?" She asked. "And don't give me any of that sarcastic shit I know is just waiting to come to the surface. I have a knife, you know and I'm not afraid to use it." She stepped back into the shadows, disappearing form view.
"I'm not afraid of knifes." I retorted.
She snorted, as if a thought had just come to her. "I have teeth and claws too, just to refresh your memory." Her voice was suddenly right next to me. "And you know what can happen if my hand slips just a little bit..." Her gloved hand scraped against the back of my neck, sending shivers down my spine. One scratch could turn you. One bite and your life is over.
I leaned forward, away from her touch. "No need to get personal, Black." Her hand wrapped around the back of my neck and squeezed.
"We're here for you." I stated. My parents would have killed me. Never, no matter what the cost, give up information regarding your mission. That was our motto. But I was dying, maybe literally, to see Black Scarlett's reaction.
"Good." She whispered. Okay, not what I was expecting. "Let's see how long it takes for you all to figure out who I am." She paused. "By the way, you should check on your girlfriend, just to make sure she's not too banged up."
"Girlfriend?" I questioned. Then I realised what she was talking about. "I swear, if you laid a finger on her, I'm going to kill you myself!" Behind me, Black Scarlett let go of my neck and chuckled.
"Interesting. Relax, I was just teasing." She said. "Although this is going to be very useful information. The weakness of a man is always a woman. You never learn, do you?"
"And you never stop killing." I stated, way too calmly. Suddenly, she was in front of me. Her one hand gripped my face (that was going to leave a mark) and the other held a knife to my throat.
Her eyes were swirling with amber and silver, not something you see on every Wolf. Hell, I've never seen silver in a Wolf. The rest of her face was covered in the mask and the only thing I could see about her features, was that she had a long face, her nose was round at the tip, not sharp and that she had faint traces of a bruise on her cheek and jaw.
"Do you want to know why I kill?" She snarled. That same awareness that had come over me three years ago, washed over me, chilling me to the bone. Something was tearing at my insides, wanting to be let out and this girl was the reason behind it.
"Why not?" I shrugged, trying to move my neck back so the knife didn't slice my jugular
"Because bastards like you killed off everyone I loved. I'm simply returning the favor." She pulled the knife away from my throat and let me go. Her eyes narrowed at me, like the first time we met. "And good luck figuring out who I am."
The back of her knife came down on my head and I passed out. Again.
