first day of school

It was the first day of school. The hallways were crowded and noisy. I felt a little nervous, like everyone else wondering what this year would bring. Love was the last thing on my mind. I just wanted to get through the day, find my classroom, and make it to dismissal.

That's when I saw you. You were just standing there maybe talking to someone, maybe just looking around. Nothing dramatic happened. No thunder, no music just... you. And for some reason, I couldn't look away. I told myself it was nothing. Just a glance. But my heart had already noticed you before my mind did.

We didn't speak that day. We were just two people in the same crowd. But somehow, seeing you made my ordinary day feel a little different a little brighter. Days turned into weeks. We started noticing each other more. Maybe a small nod in the hallway. Maybe a quick smile. I kept telling myself we were just classmates. But every time you walked by, my heart had a different story to tell.

I don't even remember exactly when we first spoke. It might have been about schoolwork, or something silly that happened in class. But once we started talking, it felt like I'd known you longer than I actually had. We laughed about the same things. We understood each other without saying much. Slowly, without me even realizing it, you became the first person I looked for when I walked into the room. You became the reason I looked forward to coming to school.

Then I found out. I found out there was someone else you liked. Someone who wasn't me. I told myself it was time to move on. I thought my feelings were fading that I was finally over it. I tried to see you just as a friend. I thought I was okay. And for a while, I really believed I was.

But feelings don't always listen to what we want them to do. Just when I thought I was done, everything changed again. We got closer. We talked more. And suddenly all those feelings I thought were gone? They came back. Stronger than before. It hit me all at once that familiar flutter in my chest when you smiled at me. That sudden nervousness when you walked near. I couldn't run from it anymore.

And the hardest part? You still don't know. Or maybe you do. Maybe you've noticed the way I look at you. Maybe you're just being kind. Maybe you know exactly how I feel and you're choosing not to say anything. So here I am liking you again, not knowing if you feel the same. Not knowing if you'll ever know.
